What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

It’s not too stuffed with too many lectures per week, and the assignments are doable. The rooms are well-equipped, and the professors are very approachable. Overall, I really enjoy my studies here in Vietnam.

    Student life at BUV.

My name is João, I am from Brasil, and I am a student at BUV. As an international student this university has been very welcoming in regards of the change in culture and language, even though most students are Vietnamese there are always other students that come from different countries, which can help in socializing and making new friends. The programs are all taught in English and are very well thought out, I major in Computer Science and all of my teachers are from outside the country as well which makes it easy to learn. Overall my experience in BUV has been very positive and I would highly recommend other people who are looking for an international university to give BUV a chance.

The computer science major, for me, it’s a great major mainly because we are learning subjects that we actually use in the real world. The content we learn is perfect for the job market. I also like the way they are always getting the student feedbacks to improve the university areas in general.

In general, my experience with the university is good! I’m glad that they listen to the students and look always to improve the university quality.

    An honest review about BUV

Personally, I like this university at first, but when I actually enrolled in it, something changed my opinion. It is mostly about the programme I’m currently studying, which is Computer Science. It is fine but pretty boring when you are expecting interactive activities during class. Other than that, I’m very pleased with the teaching, facility quality and the friendliness of the lecturers.

    Student honest review

My experience at BUV has been really positive overall. The campus is clean, modern, and a comfortable place to spend the day. I like the canteen because it has a good variety of food and it’s a nice place to relax and chat with friends between classes. The lecturers are friendly and supportive, and student life feels welcoming. Of course, the workload can be challenging sometimes, but it helps me grow and become more independent.

    Campus, facilities and club

BUV campus overall is large and has a very beautiful and modern design. As a software engineering student, I’m very satisfied with the equipment and environment that BUV campus provides me. There are several computer labs with lots of great computers that allow me to learn and enjoy the process. In addition, BUV provides a large variety of clubs

    Facilities and Programmes

This is a good university regarding facilities and environment. They staff are friendly and kind, the food and space are good. There is barely anything to criticise, however, I have some opinions regarding the study programmes (my programme, Computer Science, for the least). First, the lecturers usually speedrun through the lessons without really going into detail into the stuff we are talking about in class. Another thing to talk about is there are barely any interactive quizzes or activities for us students to get to know each other. Other than that, I am done.

    Great experience

I study computer science here and I am very happy overall. It is great to be able to pursue a UK degree without the UK living costs :). The campus is very modern, there is an intimate atmosphere, and all the lecturers are highly accessible.

Campus is in Ecopark, which is green, peaceful and not far from Hanoi

Vietnam is the best as far as I am concerned – the food is great, the people nice and polite, nature is beautiful, the culture is interesting, and how ’bout the living costs 🙂

    I feel very lucky!

    International Student at BUV

As an international exchange student from Staffordshire University, I found the process of application from Staffordshire to be a daunting prospect, if it wasn’t for the team in the international office at BUV, I would have not gone ahead with my year abroad. Upon arrival in Vietnam and BUV, we were given a tour of campus, although I found this to be lacking, as for approximately 8 weeks, I found it confusing to navigate around campus, I feel an app showing building locations would be beneficial to new students.

There obviously was a culture shock upon arrival, being from England, the cultural norms had shifted, but BUV offered a meeting, explaining the do’s and donts of Vietnam, which I found insightful. The food was the next obstacle, it is very different but I found if you stay open minded, nothing will shock you. My personal favorite is Bun Cha Ha Noi. Moving in to classes, I found a great professor who I really clicked with, Anchit Bijalwan. I found we have similar interests and he was willing to collaborate on research projects, which I found to be very motivational for a 1st year student. Although, in some modules, it felt a little rushed. I felt as though the module leaders struggled to navigate different students working paces.

Overall, studying and living in Vietnam is a challenge initially. The currency, the language barrier and the weather all play part in to this, but you very quickly become adapted to this region of South East Asia. I thoroughly enjoy my experiences in Vietnam everyday, and I feel lucky to be a part of this institution and country.

Great Campus with high end facilities

Studying computer science I found that the campus facilities are very high end and feature some of the latest tech. The professors are mostly international and focus on getting certifications and improving professional and practical skills. Campus life features a bustling community of both locals and internationals with many clubs and frequent activities.

The only downside i found was that the first semester felt alittle bit basic and as though we werent move through the topics fast enough. Overall I feel happy to be studying here and i have a very positive outlook on the next 2 years of my studies.
