Established in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art started out with 10 students in the conservatory’s first class at Pemberton Square in Boston. In the following year, the name was changed to Monroe Conservatory of Oratory, and then, in 1939 to Emerson College.Show more
My time at Emerson University has been a lesson in balancing potential with reality. The university’s greatest strength lies in its forward-thinking programs in fields like Computer Science and Media Sciences, which feel highly relevant. This academic foundation is supported by a diverse faculty of experienced professors and engaged junior lecturers, many of whom are genuinely supportive and accessible.
The modern, clean campus provides a pleasant environment and shows visible signs of growth and investment, which is encouraging. However, as a relatively new institution, it faces significant growing pains. The administrative processes can be frustratingly slow and bureaucratic, often complicating simple tasks.
Furthermore, while the theoretical curriculum is robust, the practical facilities don’t always keep pace. There can be a noticeable gap between what we learn and the resources available in labs, which sometimes lack the latest equipment for hands-on application.
I would recommend Emerson University to self-sufficient students who are not easily discouraged. It is a good choice for those drawn to its specialized programs and who can navigate some institutional inefficiencies. If you are a proactive learner seeking to be part of a developing institution’s story, you can find a valuable education here. Just be prepared to advocate for yourself and supplement your learning where needed.
View moreAt Emerson College, the opportunities for student collaboration are endless. Being apart of the media arts production program allowed for valuable lessons in self centered creativity and deep academic dives into the history and theory of the media we consume everyday. Having a campus in Boston meant you were surrounded by like minded, academically driven individuals who didn’t take no for an answer. The professors in the audio department where I spent most my time were qualified, kind, and helpful in the pursuit of my professional career.

View moreEmerson is an amazing environment for creative, hard working people aspiring to impact the world through media, social sciences or communications. Known for its film production and journalism degrees, it is fair to its students by giving them plenty of opportunities and tools to achieve their creative visions. Not all courses are amazing and neither are all the teachers. Rate my professor is a good way to gauge the teachers’ abilities and traits. Otherwise it is really up to you to find which teachers are inspiring and which seem to be there for a job. Though I’ve had some very boring, uncommunicative, and uninspiring teachers at Emerson, almost all of the staff is certainly passionate about what they do and that is what makes this organization great. You may not receive an ivy league experience at Emerson, or even a typical college experience, but you will meet some of the greatest people you will ever know and you will have some of the best days of your formative life in this odd place. Lastly, in my opinion, you could not beat the location of Emerson. Near the intersection of almost every transit line in the greater Boston area, it is pretty easy to get anywhere you need to go and for a pretty good price by train, car or bus. Not to mention that the Emerson campus is right across the street from the Boston Common and Public Garden, two amazing hang out spots and the host of many public gatherings including hemp fest, 4/20 marijuana celebration, the Boston marathon and many more conventions/protests.
