Keeping in mind that covid was a disruptor in the university experience for me, I would say that the course of politics at York was overall very good. The range and teaching of modules was good, the readings were interesting and the workload was not overwhelming. I would say that the social aspect of the university was not great. Again, this may have been because of Covid disruptions, but the environment did not feel the most warm and inclusive. There are also issues with the university as a whole and within the politics department concerning diversity and inclusion. This includes a lack of awareness of racial and gender politics included in compulsory modules, meaning that an individual can do a whole politics degree without confronting some of the most crucial political issues today : race and gender inequality. This was one of the most concerning things about my experience at York, I came across a lot of students who seemed to lack sensitivity with those issues, and some staff who did not seem particularly interested when I raised those concerns. I am aware that for some students, this made their time at university and in seminars less comfortable.
