A number of educational institutions were merged in 1860 to form Lady Byron College; namely the Ealing College of Higher Education, the London College of Music, Queen Charlotte’s College of Health Care Studies, and the Thames Valley College of Higher Education. In 1991 the school was renamed the Polytechnic of West London, followed by another name change in 1993 to the Thames Valley University when university status was granted.
More mergers took place in the years that followed, such as Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery, Reading College, and Ealing School of Art and Design until the institution became known by its current name of the University of West London.
Including under- and postgraduate, professional, and part-time students, more than 10,000 students attend the university. The majority of students study at undergraduate level. The university also welcomes international students and maintains partnerships with institutions in Sri Lanka, Germany, and Ireland, as well as many more. A particularly famous past-student of the institution is Freddie Mercury – leader singer of the band Queen. He attended the university in the 1960s.
The institution is organised into the following academic schools: The Claude Littner Business School, College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare, The Graduate School, London College of Music, London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, London School of Film, Media and Design, School of Computing and Engineering, School of Human Social Sciences, and the School of Law and Criminology.
The university is based mainly in two English cities; London and Reading. The West London campus is comprised of the Ealing site and the Brentford Site. Both bases contain many state of the art facilities and buildings and are connected by a free shuttle bus students may use.
Additionally the university also operates centres in Hong Kong and Ras al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.
Outside of academics, a bar, café, gym, lounge, and office facilities can be found on campus and are at the disposal of students. In the near future the university will also have completed work on its Westmont Enterprise Hub which will allow students to work together on business ideas.

The facilities are great. The university recently got funds and it looks great. It has expensive equipment and studios, for film, for music, rooms for law students, cooking for literally anything. Generally the lecturers are friendly and understanding. If you have any kind of problem there are societies or groups meant to help you. The student union organises parties often and you can make new friends very easily there so I recommend you to go. Very nice library. The staff is good and polite, friendly and helpful. The only problem I would see is the organisation at the beginning with the timetable or booking rooms. Everything else I think is very good. It is a good experience.
