My first year was such a new experience for me and not quite what I expected. It was a new experience in the idea that I had to become very independent as to my experience in secondary school. First off had to pick my own classes and make my own timetable which was already a bummer to me because in secondary school this was all done for you. I had to make my own notes for lectures and had no extra individual support apart from tutorials. A lot of assignments and assessments on short timeframes. It was very overwhelming, to say the least, but it really taught me that this was what growing up was and how life is for everyone when you come out of the child stage.
In more practical terms when applying for my course I was unaware that my first year would intake of me doing every business course from finance to tourism to economics and so on. For me, I didn’t sign up for that and it was a waste of time because I applied for marketing and not the rest and I hardly got a feel of what my course was about. On the other hand, I guess it was good as it helped develops skills in areas that I’d need in the business world. Not only that but also gave me a rough idea of what other things there were to get involved in if I didn’t like marketing and grew a passion for subjects like economics and Business Analysis that I didn’t know I liked till I learned in that first year.
Overall be aware that you won’t stick straight into the deep end when you get to Strathclyde Business school but it is not always a bad thing bc you will develop a lot of skills. It will be part of your character development stage as I like to say!
