It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.
Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.
Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.
Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.
In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.
Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.
Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.
The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.
I had a brilliant time studying for three years at Nottingham Trent. The tuition was well delivered – we had a variety of courses, opportunities and experiences that expanded our skillset. My accommodation in my first year was so close to the city campus, which is compact but a lovely environment with great facilities. The gym is such great value and so well equipped! Nottingham itself is a fab city to be in, particularly for students of the Art and Design college as it has a great creative scene – the Contemporary always has interesting exhibitions, there are multiple theatres and cinemas, and NTU’s very own Bonnington always has interesting events and exhibitions to go and experience. The night life is brilliant, there are numerous bars, restaurants and coffee shops, and if you need a bit of an escape the Arboretum, or (slightly further afield) is Wollaton Deer Park which is beautiful in all seasons. The public transport (buses and trams) couldn’t be easier!
View moreOverall NTU was a great university, it has a great balance of sociable booming nightlife, great societies, good facilities and fantastic student union. Alongside a busy city centre campus in which you usually do not have to walk very far to reach the lecture theatres. My final year lecturer Emmenline was very helpful and understood my queries and questions on projects and course credentials. If you are looking for a uni with a good character and fun city campus then NTU is for you!
View moreHaving read multiple reviews about NTU, I was curious how my experience would match up. When I applied in 2008, I had read that the institution was ranked 8th for design courses. During my 4 years studying Fashion Knitwear Design with Knitted Textiles, it was clear to see that this reputation was well-merited.
The resources available to students are numerous, and we were encouraged to branch out to use as many as possible. I, for example, used the laser cutting and dyeing labs, which were essential to my final project. My tutors were always on hand to consult, and we had multiple tutorials to check in with them and ensure we were on track. I was even supported during my sandwich internship year whilst working in London.
Although the university is over a century old, the design campus itself is modern and fit for purpose. Bonington is located near the city centre, along with the student union, and is very accessible and buzzing with student life.
I highly recommend Nottingham Trent University to anyone who is looking to study with top tutors at a world-renowned university.

It is known for its strong focus on creative and vocational education, and its commitment to providing students with a quality of teaching, and inclusive learning environment. The range of courses and programs on offer, and the university’s excellent facilities are some of the key strengths of the institution.
The university has strong links with local and national employers, which means that students have access to a range of internship and job opportunities. In terms of campus life, Nottingham Trent University offers a vibrant and diverse community. There are plenty of clubs, societies, and events to get involved in, as well as excellent sports facilities and student accommodation options.
When I came for my open day at NTU I immediately fell in love.
We walked around the Bonington Building where all the art studios were and it lot a fire of desire inside of me. Fully equipped and spacious studios with everything you need to let your creative desire out. Also on the walls were student acknowledgments where they had displayed exceptional work by the students. An amazing gallery space inspired me to create my best work to have displayed. I felt excited at the scene of this university, I knew it would allow me to unleash my creativity and discover more about my passions. There was an art shop in the Bonington building which made me feel like a child as Christmas. If I could go back to uni to study again it would definitely be here at NTU for a second time.
The illustration programme for masters is what I am pursuing at NTU. It is a rare specialization which they provide and wonderfully so. The teaching method and course structure is well thought of and has provided me with alot of exposure in ters of creativity.
View moreHonestly, I loved university. The work, the nightlife, the living alone diaries, the deadlines, the ups, the downs. It was all worth it. Yeah, there were times I wanted to cry but it added to the experience! I studied Graphic Design undergraduate at Nottingham Trent University, and have just graduated. My course has led me to meet some people I will be friends with for life and broadened my creative skill set in ways I can’t imagine. One thing I would say to people studying this course is that you have to be very self-motivated and inspired by your course. It is 80% remote learning and working and that only goes down each year. Personally, I really didn’t mind this as I love going to a coffee shop on my own and typing away on my laptop. However, if you are someone that prefers a lot of in-person teaching I would think about this before applying. Nevertheless, I can barely say anything bad about my course and my university experience in general, I absolutely adored every minute of it and know I’m going to miss it in years to come.
View moreOverall I had liked NTU where I did media and German. The media course was a bit dry and lacked creativity, but it wasn’t bad. The German was really well taught… it’s a shame they closed the language programme now.
View moreStudent life at this uni is amazing, the city is built for students, I can’t comment on other courses by DFTV is really worth the fees, contact time is high and the tutors care about your well-being and future.
View moreBefore starting university, I was very nervous, however excited to start. From the first day Trent made the whole experience of starting university easy and enjoyable. As someone who loves being at home, the idea of moving to a different city was very daunting, but Trent made me feel welcome. Nottingham is a great city and has many social events to attend. Additionally, the university holds many events throughout the year so that you can meet new people.
I’m about to go into my third year studying Design for TV & Film, and I feel like the course has helped me to grow so much as a person, and a designer. I would highly recommend this university.
