It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.
Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.
Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.
Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.
In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.
Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.
Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.
The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.
The university itself is quite good, it is in a nice location within Newcastle as well as having lots of good resources. That degree I feel wasn’t ran very well during Covid however, as it is a very practical one and it relies on a lot of face to face interaction which wasn’t considered when it made the switch to online learning.
View moreStudying in Northumbria as an international student is so different because of the exposure to a different culture. The course is well-structured and details the way I am going to be assessed at the beginning making it easy for me to prepare what I want to write in my essays for different modules.
View moreVery good university, staff are friendly and helpful. Some staff go above and beyond for their students of which is always a plus. Course content is interesting and engaging and really encourages you to learn more.
View moreNorthumbria University has an uplifting and welcoming environment. All teaching staff and students are friendly and happy to help anyone in need. The combination of Lectures, Seminars and Workshops gives the students a variety of way to learn and absorb knowledge; it caters to all learning methods of students.
View moreMy experience pertains to the graphic design course at Northumbria University, it was here that I was taught how to tackle client briefs using a research-based approach.
For me, the technical sessions that had a more hands-on approach were the most appealing aspects – these were a mix of sessions including how to use programmes as part of Adobe Suite and more physical design like using hot presses and screen-printing machines. Not only were these sessions taught by people with years of professional experience in industry, but they were thorough and contributed immensely to my execution of design projects throughout the three years.
I would say the course aligned well with what was advertised, although they scrapped a major part of the course during first year that decided how your second year would play out which was disappointing as this was a huge draw for myself and many others to the course.
Overall, I would recommend the course to anyone interested in learning graphic design; the modules they cover are helpful in gaining perspective on how to approach a client brief as a graphic designer.
This is a growing university with great staff and excellent facilities. In summary, we had a great time in Newcastle, a student town with a great nightlife. The course gave me a different perspective on my research (through my dissertation).
View moreI am doing MA in Creative and Cultural Industries Management and we were introduced to various interesting people, theories and venues. We also worked with museum and heritage sides. However, it is more theories than actually practice and most of the time it is a self study based.
View moreThis course was not for me. I loved my experience as part of Northumbria but this was mainly halls and the friends I met along the way.
The course offered very little direction as to what I should be doing. Photography was combined with fine art and we were also expected to work with sculpture, drawings etc and this really wasn’t what was sold.
I do remember the teachers not being very supportive or inspiring. Especially one of them!
View moreAs I’m still a student on this degree, I’m always learning something new on and about the course every day. The delivery of seminars/lectures is top quality and the one to one personal tutor programme has been extremely helpful, the tutors are really there to look out for you too.
View moreThe staff gives you awesome opportunities to grow and learn on your own rules. The timetable isn’t fulfilled with boring lessons. Classes are always interesting with many interactions with other students and a lecturer. You can always count on someone’s help when you struggle with the project or study materials overall. This school is great for working students who want to connect studying with earning. On art programs, there are a lot of software programs to learn which makes it easy to find a job after graduation. I can really recommend this school. Awesome people and an awesome program.
