What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

Is Newcastle University Fine Art BA worth it?

Firstly, I did my degree during the plague years so only my first year and last year were intact. The gaping void of the rest of the degree was still good but the last year was most certainly the best.

The Fine Art Department in Newcastle University has a wonderfully warm community feeling. The technicians are incredible; they will realise any project that you can clearly articulate. The tutors are all from varied fields of research which is a great help as you receive a multitude of viewpoints that you would have never considered alone.

You get to explore many mediums within your practice. The course begins with strands that guide you through the different fields of practice. I had never considered doing video art before and now that is the main component of my practice. This course will not box you into to one particular form of art and that can be vital.

My one main critique will be that, as a video installation artist, I headed into my final year knowing that the most experienced video artist had taken a sabbatical. Other very experienced tutors took the same action and it was hard to find replacement opinions and it left me and some other students at a loss.

Furthermore, the general management of the course by the wider university management left much to be desired. During the first semester after lockdown, the management told our department that we could only have 3 hours of studio time a week. 3 hours. Our course is almost entirely marked on practical work so it was a pain. Thankfully, our head of department worked very hard to secure 13 hours instead.

During the strikes, the University management shut down talks with the unions at a very pivotal point in the last semester of the year. It was particularly pivotal for myself as it was at the time of the final assessment. The talks were resolved eventually but not without the threat that all of our grades were going to be withheld indefinitely. I am in full support of the strikes and I think that prospective students should consider how a University’s management responded to strike action when considering which course to do.

Overall, this course has given me the freedom to shape my practice the way I saw fit and didn’t restrict me to one medium or one field of research. I would strongly argue that this is the best art course outside of London. I would still consider how Newcastle University’s management of the course could effect both you as a student and the staff in the department as this did impact my experience.

On the whole, I think it’s good. The teaching facilities in the school are very good. There is also a strong sense of history. The only thing I find lacking is the relative lack of a stadium. And the gym is relatively far away, it is much closer for me to go to the gym of the school next door, haha.

The facilities and the staff in NCL university are quite great

In my opinion, the things that impressed me most are the various facilities including the digital equipment in Culture Lab, the workshop in Fine Art and the repair services in the school. Every time I borrowed some equipment from Culture Lab such as the camera and the recorder, the staff in the school are patient and they would teach me how to use them if I was confused about the instructions. Also, the staff in the Fine art workshop are all interesting and quite nice. What is more, I have to recommend the language service in Newcastle University as it was free and in the beginning, as an international student, I was afraid that I cannot catch the English words in class and even had phobia of talking with others in English, but then I got help from the language centre and improved my writing and speaking skills much, and got much confidence from it. Also, I went to learn Japanese in the language centre, it was free too and I have never expected I could learn Japanese in the UK, at that time I thought I had got extra opportunities to learn more knowledge, thanks to the Newcastle University for helping me so much in my study abroad journey.
