International Student at Imperial College London

Imperial College London had always been my dream school. They have quality technological amenities, and many campuses which ensure that students living in various parts of London can commute easily to their nearest campus and access college facilities. There are many spaces for studying and socializing as well as bars and restaurants located throughout our South Kensington campus. I study Biochemistry, I personally feel that the course could be a little more structured. It is not very well explained on the prospective student website and there were a lot of academic subjects that took me by surprise.

one of the best unis in the world

I study biochemistry at Imperial and I would say that the course has been fantastic so far. The learning experience that this university provides is really exceptional. Although there has been a lot of challenges including independent research work that I had to complete in my penultimate and final years, everyone had helped me get through this. Imperial also has a good employment rate as the standard for the academics is high which is viewed favourably by many employers. A high number of students who obtain a degree at Imperial secure their graduate and internship positions at most Fortune 500 companies.

Therefore, this uni is not only great for a learning experience but also to build a good network.

    Studying in Imperial College London

I would say the course is well-delivered with clear goals and advice for further readings. The lecturers are all approachable and very knowledgable in their own field by doing cutting-edge researches. Other than lectures, we also have tutorials, problem classes and laboratory sessions during the term. The tutorials and problem classes are usually quite challenging and it is fine if you don’t know the answers.
With over 50% of international students in my course, I am exposed to a wide range of culture and can make friends all over the world! There are also 300 clubs and societies for students to join alongside with our studies.

Can be challenging at times, be prepared to work your ass off

My overall university experience was okay. Not good and not bad.

Teaching quality gets progressively better from first year to second year to third year, at least for the modules I have taken in second and third year. If you are used to rote memorisation through your high school studies, you might need a while to adapt to the teaching style as they throw you straight into the ‘look up answer for yourself before asking questioons’ route (not to say you cannot ask questions during the lectures or if you need clarification, but lecturers generally don’t appreciate it if the answer you’re looking for is written very clearly in the textbook). Some people adapted to it quite fast (in ~1/2 months) whereas for some people it can take longer (I took about 6/7 months myself), so don’t panic if you find yourself unable to catch up in the first few months.

Workload is fair for first year, drastically increases during autumn term in second year and final year is just crazy. Not to say you wouldn’t be able to cope, but just bear in mind that it is best not to do work last minute from second year onwards.

On the social aspect, I would say to just go out there and meet people! Don’t just mingle with people from your course, mingle with people outside your course as well. There are many brilliant ane nice people in Imperial. There are also 300 clubs and societies in Imperial and you would definitely be able to find one which you are interested in! If you have something you’re interested in but have no experience of, do not be afraid because the clubs and societies cater for complete beginners as well. I personally do not party a lot and can’t make much comments on it but as you are in London, expect everything to be expensive.

    Opinion on Imperial College London

Imperial is a really great place to study science at. The location in South Kensington is really good since it’s right next to the science museum and the natural history museum and right across from the Victoria museum

    Academia

Being at Imperial means that you are consistently surrounded by a challenging and competitive academic environment. The professors that deliver lectures are from the top of their field and most, if not all, are amazing at what they teach. The tutorial system which allows a small group of students to interact with a tutor allows one to clarify any doubts they have and work with their peers. The laboratory sessions are very well designed and help understand the topic studied in lectures further. Moreover, most lecturers are approachable in case of any doubt and there is plenty of student support. Nevertheless, the workload is high and can become very challenging but time management skills can help you make the most of the and course and university (beyond academics as well).

    Imperial College London review

Imperial is a good reputation in academics. It is a heavily STEM-focused university, providing a superb education for students. Although students have numerous opportunities to learn and grow, the workload can be overwhelming at times, particularly during the exam period. It can be a very stressful environment for some students so they frequently seek mental health support. Imperial College consistently promotes mental health awareness throughout the whole academic year. The student service is good overall and because it is in South Kensington, students are free to explore central London. There is also a wide range of societies for them to build long-lasting friendships. As compared to other Russell group universities, Imperial provides greater career development opportunities however the student satisfaction rate is generally lower.

    The best

Imperial College provides its students with an academic environment like no other, where you will find students just as interested in their subject as you are. But it’s not all academics, it has some excellent societies like Dramsoc or Live Music society where you’ll meet friends for life!

Not as bad as people make it out to be.

Imperial mainly gets complaints about bad mental health, but they do have quite a lot of facilities to help with this imo. The on campus food and sports facilities could use some work too. The union is also a bit shitty and profit driven, but when worst comes to worst they compromise well enough. Overall it’s a fun place and you learn a lot – I don’t regret attending.

    Hard but worth the effort

They certainly work you hard but if you are able to get in you should be able to cope. Generally you can maintain an ok social life but you really need to work hard plan hard if you want to. My biggest complaint is that sometimes the college takes decisions that just shows they really don’t care about the students at all, just their bottom line and research.
