Nowadays, more and more students start to pursue a degree in modern languages. A modern languages degree is not only related to learning a new language but also understand the cultural context of the countries in which the language is spoken.
Candidates studying a modern languages course will also be given knowledge and experience of the political and historical contexts of a particular region. On top of that, the use of literary texts and media will develop not only their skills but also their perception about learning a different language.
Due to the increased globalisation, there is a high demand for modern languages graduates. The ability to communicate in another language and understand its background is a major advantage.
Modern Language courses are designed to give students transferable skills, which can be applied in all areas of activity. Candidates will have high communication skills, accompanied by data collection and interpreting skills, which are appreciated by employers, regardless of your career choice.
Modern Languages Degrees are four years commitments, out of which one semester or a year should be spent abroad – in a partnered institution. This gives students the opportunity to practice the language they are studying and understand a new culture.
Modern Languages is a degree that can be studied either as a single honour degree or a joint honour degree. This gives students the ability to combine modern language with another course such as politics, literature, history and many others.
The School of geography at the university of Leicester has excellent communication between staff/students. They outline all support offered and provide all the information needed. One area for improvement is the release of timetables. This takes a long time and does not get released on a student’s calendar 48 hours after registration as indicated on their website.
View moreI spent four years at the University of Leicester studying for a BA in French and Spanish. I would consider that period of my life to be one of the most impactful. Firstly, the way I secured admission could be classed as a miracle, as I had to apply via clearing and the person I spoke to when I called to find out what f there was any space on the course, admitted me due to the fact that he liked my name. The time/experience as a student in the University was filled with many pleasant memories, it moulded my character and enabled me to accomplish new feats; for example I was a fashion writer in the Ripple, the University of Leicester’s newspaper. I also went on a year abroad to France and Spain and learnt how to adapt to new environments/cultures. My university days were also pivotal in helping me form lifelong friendships. It is an experience that I will always treasure.
View moreI would like to stress the value of having such a close-knit and dedicated modern languages department at the university. The staff knew everyone by name and no problem was too big for any member of the team. Their teaching methods and attentive attitudes made each student feel part of a community. Small class sizes meant that attention to individual progress was so efficient. All of this combined made not only my academic journey a smooth one, but it meant that I was able to build lifelong friendships with my classmates. I would highly recommend my course and the university to others.
View moreI personally would rate this university 2.5 stars. Having started two different degrees at this university I have discovered that they have very poor communication throughout the departments and also to you personally. Although I adore the course that I’m currently studying, I have had nothing but problems since I started at the university. However, they give exceptionally good support for students with SplDs and the majority of the staff are very supportive and understanding.
