What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Excellent Present. Future Struggles.

University of Surrey is an excellent university for most of it’s aspects. Filled with a ever blossoming varied student base with plenty of facilities, it’s hard to go against the experience and education the University provides in relation to your programme of choice. The only issue lays in the topic of education is a general gripe with the University education system of the United Kingdom at large.

At no point will you be realistically prepped for the genuine struggle and hardship of post-university life, the time you have at the University will be cherished and you will be treated very well but the millisecond you are out the door and not paying into the University anymore, it’s as if your existence is whiped from their memory, undestandably the constant cycle of prepping for the next batch of students is important but education even at higher levels continues to feel less like guidance and more obligation of the youth of the nation.

University of Surrey - Media and Communications

I am currently in my second year of University, and am studying Media and Communications. Since Covid-19 ruined my experience last year, this year has started off great, and I have been able to get a real sense of what the University life is like, as well as meeting new people and having a better class experience overall. We have many students across the world, and thus I have been able to expand my friendship groups and become more social, as everyone in my course is very friendly and kind. As for the course itself, so far I really enjoy it, it’s fun, interesting and engaging, and definitely something different for me. The work we are given is very straightforward, and plenty of materials are offered in order to help us achieve the best of our potential. I would highly recommend doing Media and Communications, especially if you are looking to go into the film industry, journalism or marketing, or even if you don’t have a particular career in mind, it will certainly open the door for many opportunities.

    Campus life!

Surrey is a university with great teaching, it’s campus is well concentrated and the sports facilities are great! Surrey campus makes it easy to socialise, the university has a club “rubix” which organises regular events and nights. The Students union is very active, there are a lot of different societies you can join. The facilities are great, Surrey has a five-floor library with plenty of study room, some amazing fields and lakes. The accommodations at Surrey are ok, the rooms are standard and the prices vary but remain affordable. It might be difficult to find a place to stay after first year since more and more students are joining Surrey making rent also quite expensive. Overall my experience at Surrey was really great!
