What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Okay considering the circumstances!

Could definitely push students harder, more work load to maintain engagement with the course. Mainly remote due to pandemic, we were the ‘guinea pigs’ for remote education. More concentration on the technical side instead of the artistic side.

    A good uni

A good place to study, nice location, slightly disorganised on the university’s part when it comes to assessments. Overall, it has been a nice three years. I have met wonderful people and have gained a lot of experience in the art world to prepare me for after graduation.

About my post-graduate course (Game programming)

Firstly, I would like to talk about my university course structure. It was an amazing course with precise deliverables. I have chosen this just because I got my desired lectures. The positive thing here is students can choose their field of study independently. For instance, If you want to make a game with different engine and concepts, the new methodologies are always supported by our tutors. There will be mentors assigned to each student to cope with their daily struggles in the course. Overall, I love my course.

Area is stunning, travel is questionable.

Falmouth University was my first choice when applying through UCAS, and I got accepted through clearing. The team was swift in getting my application through, and I was coming to uni within a month of the first application being sent! ^-^

The campus is stunning. Depending on which course you take, you go to a different campus. There is one based in Penryn and another based in Falmouth itself. Both of them are wonderful. The campus focuses on large open forested or green areas, with many places for students to sit inside and out. There is a vast range of plants to look at, all amplified by the sea air as both campuses are next to the ocean.

Each campus has its library and different groups to help you, depending on your questions. There is also a considerable range of student-led activities for anyone and everyone to get involved with.

I’m currently in my second year of the Games Design: Writing 3-year course, and there have been ups and downs, but the teachers are always ready to help and super kind. There are also support desks if you need additional help and don’t know where to look for it.

The biggest issue, however, is the travel. If you are only based on one campus, it’s alright. However, my course flies between both campuses, and the only way to travel is by bus. This wouldn’t be an issue if the prices of bus tickets were fixed, or as students, we get free travel, but this isn’t the case. When I started one year ago, an all-day child ticket was £1, now it’s £3 and still going up. The latest price update was only a week ago. We thought it would go down once the tourists left, but that didn’t happen.

All in all, this university is a wonderful place to go. I don’t have much to say about it. I would highly recommend Falmouth to be on your radar if you are looking for a good Uni. <3

    Not amazing, not terrible

For myself, I was on the BA Drawing course and found that I wasn’t 100% sure that I would do the same course again. I appreciated a lot of aspects of the course – the unit content was interesting and built a wider perspective on the subject matter. It was also great to have a community of people that were like-minded on the subject, but then again that could be said of any place – it’s not exclusive to Falmouth University.

Some of the tutors were great and very clear and helpful, but some of them weren’t as much. I found that a lot of the marking criteria was very vague and a lot of the time it could be difficult to gauge what could be done to improve my work. Often times I would also have contradictory opinions on this from different tutors, which was very frustrating. I was consistently told not to even consider grades in my practise, however it was difficult to do this in a practical, functioning in the outside world kind of way. There was also minimal support when it came to finding jobs after university.

    Falmouth University.

The course leaders are very helpful and always wanting to give adivce as much as the tutors are. I’m able to study and get help with anything I have problems with, if there is something I don’t understand I am usually able to get help from teachers. There are also supervised one to one sessions which help, I get good advice and I get to show my work I’ve done.

    Amazing university

I studied illustration. And I loved it. Falmouth university has a great reputation and it’s so clear why. The support is brilliant and the staff are so kind. I had some mental health concerns and I had grade concerns, when I asked for help, they didn’t think twice before assisting me. The degree was incredibly difficult though. And I was very stressed. The only criticism I have is the work load and how difficult the degree was to manage. But that was preparation for the industry. It’s such a great experience and I’ll recommend it to all. Falmouth is a student bubble and it’s a world you should definitely experience. I will always look back fondly.
