What Is a History Degree?

History is one of the most desired academic degrees amongst students when it comes to pursuing a Bachelor of Arts.

History degrees are designed to teach you to move beyond yourself and envision other worlds, to explore the interplay between material circumstances and human character.  History combines the careful analysis of evidence with compelling storytelling. Moreover, History degrees aim to increase cultural sensitivity and literacy.

This degree is divided into various areas of expertise such as Classical History or Art History, which will help students gain relevant knowledge for themselves.

Benefits of a History Degree

History is one of the most versatile undergraduate majors, due to the fact that it touches upon all forms of human endeavour from arts and languages to science and economics.

Candidates studying a History course will also be taught how to effectively collect, analyse, interpret, and arrange a wide variety of sources into persuasive arguments. Thus, having these skills will increase the chance of any graduate finding a job, no matter if it is in this field or not.

A report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education illustrates that graduates from History majors have the highest salary amongst graduates from all other humanities majors.

History Degree Structure

History courses are usually a three-year commitment and offer many academic programmes ranging from foundational courses to specialised ones. Some universities even have site excavations, through which students gain more practical knowledge.

Like most of the degrees, any History course concludes with a dissertation in any chosen area of interest.

    Warwick v Me

When first starting at university, it felt different. For obvious reasons such as moving away from home, having to pay rent and making new friends. But also because for the first time ever, it was me versus everything, alone. Imposter syndrome, managing finances and become acquainted with new people from different walks of life, were all things that i now had to deal with myself and I was ready for the challenge. I’m thankful to have had great support from home and people that I began to meet at university, in regards to my studies and circumstances. I’ve enjoyed my time at Warwick so far and all that I’ve been honoured to participate in whilst being on campus. Warwick has given me more than I could ever imagine and I’m grateful for my life and time there so far.

    Scholarship

Over the course of my study, the University of Warwick has been excellent in its provision of scholarship material, including its original research first hand from lecturers and academics. Specifically in its English

    A Sea of Student Opportunities

The atmosphere of the Warwick campus is unbeatable, the vast opportunities available to enrich the student life such as undergrad research opportunities, numerous club and societies, wide volunteering opts, ambassadorships, sports clubs and part-time jobs cover the social aspect. The education is certainly of a high expected level. As a second year English and History student, I can say I’m comfortable in my studies, however the wide range of topics available in the course provide great intellectual challenges to really stretch me out my comfort zone. However, I would say some elements of the learning system are quite rigid, and I do advocate for an accomodating change. Nonetheless, an exciting range of opportunities available here besides basic education.

    Vast access to learning material

The program that I am currently studying in History and Politics which means that every year I do two modules on each side. Due to how related history and politics can be at times, I find that I can draw on examples from either side of the course to help answer a question or to shape my thought.

If you choose to do History and Politics note that to a degree your options will be limited. For example, in Year 1 you don’t have an option for Politics and only one option for History. In Year 2 you also have one mandatory module for politics. It might feel limiting at first but usually, even the mandatory modules help develop your thought and apply them to the rest of the modules.

The program encourages you to develop your thought through not only a variety of readings and additional material but also through seminars. The seminars usually have a diverse group of thought, so you often find your views being challenged constructively.

As previously mentioned, the modules provide a variety of readings and additional material to support you. Having said that, if you struggle with reading through large text then it might be an issue. Although the university tries hard to keep the text as short as possible, do not be surprised if some weeks you have 100 pages to read from each module.

Finally, the programme’s examination style varies per the module chosen, but all modules have you writing two essays, one typically 1500 and the other 3000 words, these essays are not timed and instead you have to submit them when the deadline is due.

Overall, if you are interested in both history and politics and are willing to make some sacrifices in terms of choices, this programme is fantastic. It is challenging yet rewarding.

    Amazing Facilities and Staff

Having just completed my first term as an undergraduate Politics and Sociology student at Warwick University, I can safely say that choosing Warwick has been one of the test decisions I’ve made so far. From the hundreds of societies and organisations you can join to explore your passions to the incredibly helpful lecturers and peers who take their time to get to know you as a person and not just a pupil, Warwick has been a revelation for me.

One of my main highlights was the crazy excitement of Freshers Week. We had literally hundreds of events to choose from to help us make new friends, get to know the uni better as well as pick up new hobbies and interests that most of us enjoy doing alongside our studies. I am now a proud member of the motorsport society and learning important life skills with the Public speaking society.

Warwick’s academic status speaks for itself in the league tables but I believe what makes it truly stand out from its peers is the care that has been taken to make the university a place to allow you to develop socially and not just academically.

I can’t wait to start next term and do my first speech and I’m really grateful that the uni has given me the tools and the platform to do this.

    Flexible

Warwick University is one that is quite flexible and open in its style of teaching. It really pushes the emphasis on you to choose what you wish to study. There are limits to these such the few core modules, but even then they allow you to focus on the areas that you find the most interesting. This can be beneficial, especially if you want to fully enjoy the campus experience with societies. The style of examination is also fairer as it allows you to choose the assessment style you wish in certain modules, such as no exams or presentations instead of another essay. Although the facilities made to history students do suffer at times. The careers department is also very supportive, but a lot is to do with you being proactive in engaging with opportunities, such as the Warwick Summer Internship programme.

    Overall a great experience

Having been at Warwick for 2 years I can honestly say they have been amazing. I’ve met so many amazing people and felt welcomed and at ease very quickly. The societies and sports clubs offer so many opportunities for people and there is such a wide range that I feel there’s something for everyone. The accomodation is very good as well, there’s a range of types of accomodation as well as prices and they offer a good range of off-campus residences for 2nd/3rd/4th year students. The academic facilities on campus are good with many study spaces around campus and additional places allocated during exam period. Nightlife is usually more popular off-campus however the SU run many clubbing events including the weekly Pop! The location of the campus itself is away from main town/city but there are buses from campus to the two nearest towns with many restaurants/shops.
