It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.
Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.
Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.
Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.
In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.
Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.
Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.
The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.
The Fashion Promotion course allows many career opportunities in the Fashion industry. Having an insight into each section of the industry is beneficial to finding the right career path for you. The course generally covers the promotional side of the industry with insights into marketing, PR, trend forecasting, content creation and many more. This course would be ideal for someone who is looking to study Fashion but is not sure what exactly to specialise in.
The campus is modern with all of the faculties you need to study for a degree. The lecture rooms are more like college/sixth form lectures which is good if you’re looking for 1-1 conversation with the lecturers. The library has working computers and printer services with the opportunity to book out quiet study areas. Not only does the campus provide facilities for studying but there are also many areas to socialise and make friends.
Student Life is average with areas to improve. As I previously mentioned the campus has many areas to socialise and get to know people which is a positive. As the Cardiff Campus isn’t the main USW Campus, all of the societies and activities are located a train ride away in Treforest. However, there have been conversations around students proposing to start up societies in the Cardiff Campus as this is something the University lacks.
Overall, the accommodation is very modern and exactly what you’d need. There are two options for the Cardiff Campus which are located in the centre of the City opposite the campus. Similar to the University, there are areas to study in the accommodation as well as a common room to socialise. Facilities such as a laundry room and post boxes are available on site. All of the rooms are equipped with double beds, a desk and a good amount of storage with en-suites. There are options to have a studio room which includes a kitchen area rather than sharing a kitchen with 5-7 other students.
View moreUSW is in such a lovely area and the campus is absolutely beautiful. It has pretty much everything you could need on campus, and has good transport links for buses and coaches. I haven’t had much experience with the student support services but I’ve heard from friends that they’re pretty good. The uni was pretty good with COVID precautions, with vaccinations being available on campus as well as free testing. At times it’s apparent that it is a company and it could do with remembering that its main priority should be its students and staff over making money for the VC, but overall I’m happy here and I wouldn’t change my decision.
View moreI was one of those unlucky students interrupted by covid. No one knew what was happening, how we were to continue, especially being a really hands-on course. I ended up repeating my second year, and not getting much better at it either. My tutors were a wild mix of understanding and blaming me and I didn’t know where I stood half the time. However, I pushed through and, with the help of a counsellor and personal mentor, have made it to (nearly) the end of the year. This course is a challenge. If you’re advised to do a foundation year DO IT, the tutors know far more than you do about what the course is like and if you are ready for the jump.
