My bachelor’s in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics (PPLE) at the University of Amsterdam is a small-scale, intensive study program that teaches its students to navigate a highly demanding academic environment and critically assess societal problems through a lens of various disciplines. Its rigorous training in both qualitative (interviewing, focus group, participant observation) and quantitative (experiments, surveys, statistical analyses using SPSS) methods enables PPLE students with the critical skills to scrutinise complexities. My major in social psychology provides me with particular knowledge on understanding the individual mind behind such problems. This is supplemented by my interest in political science and cultural anthropology, allowing me to conduct research in various disciplines. As part of my bachelor’s, I conducted two months of fieldwork with marginalised youths at a non-profit organisation in Cape Town, conducting participatory action research. This experience applied academic knowledge to real-life contexts and served as a foundation for my academic and professional growth. It has prepared me for the next step, as I now begin my master’s at the University of Cape Town.
