Maastricht University (known in Dutch as Universiteit Maastricht and abbreviated to UM) was established in 1976 and is a popular new university both in The Netherlands and on a global stage thanks to both its taught programmes and research endeavours. Approximately 17,000 students attend the public institution of which a significant portion come from abroad. The university employs around 3,500 people and is still growing.
The School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University was founded in 1984 and today boasts an impressive Triple Crown accreditation by the bodies AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA. This accomplishment means the school is part of 1% of institutions of education in the world to have achieved this feat. UMIO Maastricht is a part of this school and is endorsed by Maastricht University.
Studying at UMIO Maastricht
Courses of study at the school are offered in a variety of subject areas, such as: MBAs (The Maastricht MBA and Euro MBA – both in English), Executive Masters (such as the Executive Master in Cultural Leadership – in English, Postdoctorale Opleiding tot Registeraccountant – in Dutch, and the International Executive Master of Auditing – in English), Management Programmes (e.g. Verandermanagement – in Dutch, International Finance and Control Campus – in Dutch, and Advanced Service Design Thinking – in English), and Permanent Education (e.g. Permanente Educatie voor Finance & Control Professionals – in Dutch). UMIO Maastricht also facilitates seminars and workshops for its students.
Concerning its teaching, UMIO Maastricht focus on four specific areas:
- Navigating Complexity – the world has become a smaller place and it is now much easier to be connected to people and organisations across the globe. This international network, however, can get complicated, and UMIO aims to help and prepare students to be able to work successfully in this modern world.
- Futurized Practice – UMIO wants its students to consider their future careers, and to lay the appropriate foundations for that as soon as possible.
- Dynamic Connections – the school encourages students to work and create relationships with other people and uses the quote ‘if you want to go far, go together.’
- Personal Growth – UMIO promotes the importance of life-long learning.
In addition, UMIO also focuses on three topics concerning its services:

- Sustainable Finance and Control
Services at UMIO
UMIO wishes for its student to succeed and reach their full potential, and so offers a number of services alongside its taught programmes to give students the best chance at success. These services include coaching – which allows students to step back a little and think about where they are now and how they can get to where they want to be. Coaching can be individual, team, or in conjunction with the student’s education, for instance. Coaches are professionals in their field and this service can be offered in English, Dutch, French, and German.
Another service is the school’s European Management Residency, where groups of 15-35 international students visit the school during the summer and complete a course of one or two weeks through English
Finally, the school also operates the Service Science Factory which helps assess if a business idea is feasible or not. They can also help improve an existing idea or service within a matter of weeks.
