What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    The rise of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, when I studied there in 2018, was a very small program. I really liked this aspect because of the one-on-one attention provided by the professors and the intimacy of the workgroups. After the first year of completing the program, the popularity of the study increased significantly, with the number of students rising from 80 to 300. This growth demonstrates the study’s popularity at VU, which is a result of the well-delivered curriculum by the University

    :)

As a computer science student at the Vrije Universitet in Amsterdam, I have been thoroughly impressed with the quality of education and the level of expertise of the professors at this esteemed institution. The faculty members are passionate about their subjects and are always willing to provide guidance and support to students.

The curriculum is rigorous, and the coursework is designed to challenge students and prepare them for the ever-evolving world of technology. The courses cover a broad range of topics, from programming languages and algorithms to artificial intelligence and machine learning. The faculty also encourages students to take part in research projects and internships, providing valuable opportunities to apply what we have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios.

The campus facilities are excellent, with state-of-the-art labs and equipment available for students to use. The university’s location in Amsterdam also offers plenty of opportunities for students to engage in cultural and recreational activities outside of their studies.

One of the things that stand out to me is the diverse student body. Being exposed to different perspectives and backgrounds has enriched my learning experience and expanded my understanding of computer science as a field.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Vrije Universitet to any computer science student looking for a challenging and rewarding academic experience, excellent faculty, and a diverse and inclusive community.

    Online classes aren’t great

I study Artificial Intelligence and I love my program, but due to the actual circumstances, the vast majority of the program is taught online but exams have to be taken in person. This means that people from all over the world (taking into account that many students that study Computer Science come from Asia) have to assist twice or three times per period (2 months) to take their exams. If the whole program is online; so should the exams be. If the program is taught in person, students have a rational choice to take. For the rest, it is alright

    Learn python

I would recommend it, however skills in python are extremely required, you basically need it for each subject and if you do not have AI background make a course before you apply. Additionally, knowledge in Mathematics, linear algebra and depending on your track could be health, cognition or AI itself.

Hello! :) I\'m sorry to bother you, I read your response (from 3 years ago, sorry..) about the AI course at VU Amsterdam. Since you studied there I had a couple questions to ask you: I am currently waiting to be admitted at the Neuroscience program, but since the ranking is very competitive I am looking for alternative options and one of them could be the AI programCould you give me a an overall feedback on the program (both academically and professionally)? Do you think of it as a good program? Also, since my interest leans toward the Neuroscientific (for example, neurotech companies) sector, from your experience, do you think this program also offers the opportunity to specialize in the neuro sector (for example with through the Cognitive track)?sorry for the long question, I hope you have the time to give me some more information, thank you for the bother!

    VU general review

An overall good European university. I believe that tuition fees are expensive compared to the services and ranking of the university. A general feeling I got is that an international student is seen as a moving wallet rather than a person who faces many more problems compared to the locals. But I guess that is how North Europe works. A bad thing is that 2-year master students only get 1 year of student accommodation in order to serve 6-month “students” who come here mostly as tourists. If for some reason you end up doing your thesis abroad, good luck with getting responses in time. However, my overall rating is good since I cannot argue about the educational value that is offered and the prospects in the market after graduation.
