Hello, I am a biomedical engineering student at General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University. This university is categorized as one of the best in the country and is recognized for gender equality, quality education, and discipline. Personally, I really enjoy attending this university because it offers a vast amount of space, which is very beneficial for mental health due to the abundance of nature around the buildings and classrooms.
The engineering classrooms could be improved, but other faculties such as computing and management have really nice classrooms because the buildings are relatively new. However, sometimes lectures and practical sessions get postponed or canceled on short notice, but they make amendments as soon as possible.
In terms of academics, everything is conducted in English, and our certifications and achievements are recognized globally. We partner with various universities across different countries. Additionally, we have excellent facilities such as libraries, research labs, a gymnasium (free for KDU students), a café, and auditoriums. We also have various events like the July Ball, New Year celebrations, in-person events, interfaculty competitions, and more.
KDU offers several sports such as basketball, football, soccer, rugby, squash, badminton, tennis, table tennis, and netball. There are also various clubs like the Rotaract Club, Toastmasters Club (the first in Sri Lanka and Maldives), Media Circle, and the KDU Shooting Sports Association. We have workshops, seminars, film festivals, movie marathons, and design competitions that help us diversify our skill sets and expand our networks.
In conclusion, I have really enjoyed my time here. I’ve met some wonderful people and connected with many like-minded individuals from all over the country and even international students. We also get to work with military bodies, which enhances our team dynamics and understanding of different cultures and backgrounds, helping us develop team building and self-development skills. These experiences are invaluable for both personal and professional growth, and I am truly grateful for them.
