Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.
The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.
I studied at BAU Escola de Disseny in Barcelona, completing a Master’s in Branding and a Master’s in Packaging. The programs offered a strong creative foundation and practical projects that helped me think beyond conventional design. The professors were industry professionals, which meant we got real-world practice and feedback, not just theory
One of the best parts was the diversity of students, multicultural environment that encouraged collaboration and communication. The facilities were modern with interesting artistic areas.
On the downside, some classes felt rushed due to the intensive program structure, and occasionally I wished for more one-on-one mentoring time with professors. However, overall, the experience was highly valuable and helped me refine my design thinking and expand my professional network in Europe.
