It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.
Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.
Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.
Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.
In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.
Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.
Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.
The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.
Studying at NTU, I was immediately impressed by the modern campus and state-of-the-art classrooms. Lecture halls were spacious, well-equipped, and designed for interactive learning. The university placed a strong emphasis on research, offering students access to top-tier labs and resources. The academic workload was heavy, but professors were knowledgeable and encouraged critical thinking. Group projects were common, promoting collaboration and problem-solving skills. The library was massive, with plenty of study spaces, though it could get crowded during exam season. With so many academic opportunities, NTU provided a rigorous yet rewarding learning experience. However, the pressure to excel was intense, and some students found it overwhelming. While the university offered support services, maintaining a balanced lifestyle required strong time management skills.
View moreIf aesthetics were everything, NTU would be a utopia. The green spaces, avant-garde buildings, and high-tech facilities create a visually inspiring atmosphere. But beneath the sleek surface, the student experience is a mixed bag. The hall system fosters camaraderie, yet also cliques. International students often struggle to break into local friend groups, and if you don’t secure a hall spot, the commute is punishing. The academic rigor is undeniable—assignments are relentless, and semester breaks barely feel like a breather. While the infrastructure is world-class, student support services can feel impersonal. NTU demands resilience and adaptability; those who thrive here are disciplined self-starters. It’s a place that will push you to your limits, but whether it molds or overwhelms you depends entirely on your ability to navigate its demanding environment.

The Hive, an iconic building known for its eco-friendly design, is not just an architectural marvel—it’s a hub where students from various disciplines come together to engage in interdisciplinary art projects, poetry readings, and even film screenings. I found it surprising how much focus the university places on cultivating a balance between technological prowess and artistic expression. Another unique aspect of life here is the lush, sprawling campus itself. It’s so large that students often cycle or use electric scooters to get around. The natural surroundings, from the Yunnan Garden to the lakes, provide peaceful spots to recharge mentally, especially during exam periods. This blend of nature and creativity creates a holistic university experience that goes beyond academics.
