The university is generally a great option, located in a semi urban area, easy access into the school facilities ( I can’t remember being lost in Awka even once).
First year is generally tedious for all science students as there is general science courses for all the science students to attend to lectures together, all of which are CBT Exams.
Biochemistry in UNIZIK like it’s informally called is an eye opener to what the body is made of, what could go wrong and possible solutions, it’s fascinating as the professors and lecturers in the department are well grounded and invested in the course.
The cost of living in Awka as someone that stayed in the north is very high and frustrating and accommodation currently ranges between 300 thousand naira to 800 thousand naira for a self contain and hostel space between 70 thousand to 250 thousand naira which always makes buying a hostel space a very serious work during the time.
Lastly, the school calender is one that doesn’t rush students so much that they’re squeezed and also don’t drag a semester so much that the students are burnt out and tired.
View moreStudying at Nnamdi Azikiwe University has been a real journey of self-discovery for me. I studied Sociology, and though it took me some time to truly understand the course, it opened my eyes to how people think, act, and influence one another. It taught me patience, curiosity, and how to look beyond myself.
What I liked most was how the university environment encouraged growth and independence. I met people from different backgrounds, learned how to work with others, and grew more confident in who I am. Some lecturers were really inspiring and helped me see learning differently.
What I didn’t like was that sometimes students were left to figure things out on their own, and I wish there was more personal guidance to help us connect our studies with future goals.
Overall, I would recommend NAU to anyone who’s willing to take responsibility for their own growth. Campus life is lively and full of learning moments both inside and outside the classroom.
Honestly, most of the lecturers were corrupt. They would do anything to extract money from students, either by having students sort their way financially to pass certain courses, or by selling their handouts/texts, which we barely used. However, the clique of friends I made was intelligent and studious, and this pushed me beyond my limits.
View moreMy experience so far at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka has been quite a demanding exposure to competent tuition.
The school is commendably inclined towards practical-oriented studies, with academic standards at levels that mandate keen commitment to studies and research.
View moreNnamdi Azikiwe University, popularly known as UNIZIK, is a federal university, established in 1991 with multiple campuses in Awka(the main campus), Nnewi, Agulu, etc. These campus are quite large providing different environmental settings. The motto includes “Discipline, Excellence and Self-Reliance”. The school offers a wide variety of programs: education, sciences, management, computer science, arts, etc, and a good theoretical grounding and, in some cases, practical components for the students. The school hostel is decent, and some hostels and lodges, especially private ones inside or near campus, are fairly well-managed. However, there are some weaknesses and challenges faced by the school one of which is with the infrastructure and facilities: The classrooms in most departments are quite small for the number of students leading to classes being crowded and noisy. Computer labs and internet access are never reliable or up to date. This limits practical work in some tech-oriented courses. Then, there’s the delay in the administrative tasks like processing results, lecture scheduling, etc. In addition, many students experience stress which has earned the school the name “UNISTRESS” due to a variety of factors like long lecture periods, bus/unfriendly distance between hostels and lecture halls, exam timetables that are not well spaced. There have also been serious incidents involving student safety (hostel access in emergencies). These highlight concerns about welfare and emergency protocols. Some occurrences of violence or danger around campus (e.g. stray bullets, cultist activity) have been reported. This causes concern among students about personal safety. Like many Nigerian public universities, UNIZIK is not immune to disruptions like staff strikes, academic calendar inconsistencies, which can delay graduation or interrupt studies.
Overall, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka is a good choice if you want a federal university in Nigeria with a good reputation, varied academic programmes and decent value for money. It has its challenges, many of which are common across public universities in Nigeria, but there is also clear evidence of commitment to improvement and a number of strengths to build on.
Thus, if you plan to study at UNIZIK, you should:
Expect a mix of strong academics along with some systemic inefficiencies.
If you’re in a technical or lab-intensive field, you may sometimes have to supplement your own resources like access to hardware, internet, personal laptops.
Living on campus or lodges immediately outside may be more convenient, but costs vary and facilities differ. Private hostels can offer better comfort but at higher cost.
Be prepared for stress: time management will be key, especially around exam periods and during seasons of heavy academic load. Plan finances ahead for school fees, upkeep, unexpected costs.
Know the environment, know emergency procedures, and how to access help if needed.
