What Is a History Degree?

History is one of the most desired academic degrees amongst students when it comes to pursuing a Bachelor of Arts.

History degrees are designed to teach you to move beyond yourself and envision other worlds, to explore the interplay between material circumstances and human character.  History combines the careful analysis of evidence with compelling storytelling. Moreover, History degrees aim to increase cultural sensitivity and literacy.

This degree is divided into various areas of expertise such as Classical History or Art History, which will help students gain relevant knowledge for themselves.

Benefits of a History Degree

History is one of the most versatile undergraduate majors, due to the fact that it touches upon all forms of human endeavour from arts and languages to science and economics.

Candidates studying a History course will also be taught how to effectively collect, analyse, interpret, and arrange a wide variety of sources into persuasive arguments. Thus, having these skills will increase the chance of any graduate finding a job, no matter if it is in this field or not.

A report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education illustrates that graduates from History majors have the highest salary amongst graduates from all other humanities majors.

History Degree Structure

History courses are usually a three-year commitment and offer many academic programmes ranging from foundational courses to specialised ones. Some universities even have site excavations, through which students gain more practical knowledge.

Like most of the degrees, any History course concludes with a dissertation in any chosen area of interest.

Campus life, student life in general

Overall, the University of Lagos is a great institution, and I genuinely enjoy being a student here. I am in the Department of History and International Relations, and while the academic experience can be rewarding, it also requires a high level of self-discipline.

One of the main challenges I have faced is the inconsistency in teaching. Some lecturers do not engage actively in class, and in certain cases, students are left to study most topics on their own. There are also instances where lecturers go on sabbatical leave and return close to exam periods, which can make learning more difficult. However, this has pushed me to become more independent and proactive in my studies.

On the positive side, the university offers a vibrant campus life. There are several programs, forums, and student-led initiatives that support personal, professional, and even health development. These opportunities make the overall experience enjoyable and help students grow beyond academics.

The reason I rated the school 4 stars instead of 5 is mainly due to the accommodation issue. There are limited hostel spaces available, and the allocation process can sometimes feel unfair, with cases of favoritism and nepotism. This leaves many students without access to on-campus housing, forcing them to seek accommodation off-campus, which is often very expensive and not always convenient.

Despite these challenges, I still find the University of Lagos to be a fascinating place to study. The campus environment is lively and engaging, even for someone like me who prefers to stay indoors most of the time unless attending lectures or running errands.

Overall, I would recommend this university to prospective students, especially those who are self-motivated and willing to take charge of their own learning experience.

    A Learning Experience

University of Lagos has been an incredible journey for me. I appreciate the academic excellence, research opportunities, and diverse student community. While there are some infrastructure challenges and bureaucratic processes, the experience has been worth it. I would recommend that prospective students research thoroughly, get involved in extracurricular activities, and utilize campus resources. Overall, Unilag has been a great place to learn and grow

The University of Lagos has a good academic environment for students which aids focus.
One thing I like about the school is the environment it provides, the libraries and even reading spots for students which does a lot of good. Whereas, one thing I dislike about it is the fact that the academic lives of the students are slowed down.
