What is an Accounting & Finance degree?

An Accounting & Finance degree focuses on the management of monetary resources available to an organization. Such a degree is aimed at students who want to pursue careers in investment analysis, management, banking, auditing, consulting and financial management. It teaches students how to assess the assets and liabilities of an organization financially and manage the financial risk of their activity.

Accounting & Finance covers the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting and finance but also includes other aspects of the business activity, such as financial management and control, corporate finance, company accounts, investment and business law. Optional module options provided by different universities around the world often allow students to specialize in a particular area such as auditing, taxation, etc.

Benefits of an Accounting & Finance degree

The completion of an Accounting & Finance degree comes along with numerous benefits. Students develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly demanded by employers in both the private and the public sector and result in graduates often finding employment in large multinational organizations that offer professional services such as PwC, KPMG and Deloitte. On top of that, established companies around the world offer excellent and well-structured graduate schemes, which help Accounting & Finance graduates to kick-start their careers.

Accounting & Finance degrees are mostly practically oriented. They allow students to put the knowledge and skills they acquire on a daily basis to practice through simulated and real-life business accounts management and work placement opportunities.

Most Accounting & Finance degrees are professionally accredited by professional bodies, such as ACCA, AIA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, which provides students with the opportunity to become chartered accountants. Students gain professional qualifications in accountancy, which eliminates the need for additional certifications after graduation.

Due to the nature of the Accounting & Finance Degree, which complements business-related subjects, students often have the opportunity to complete a joint honours degree.

Accounting & Finance Degree Structure

An Accounting & Finance degree’s duration varies depending on the country and degree level. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting & Finance can be completed in three years. However, universities also offer students the option to take a sandwich course, which allows them to undertake a year-long placement between their second and third year, which extends the course to four years. Four years is the regular time of completion of this degree in other countries, such as the United States.

The first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance introduces the core principles of accounting and finance, including financial accounting, management accounting and finance as well as economics and business law. The second year’s focus is usually on managerial and business economics, financial control, corporate finance and company accounts, but optional modules might enable students to pursue their interests in other aspects of Accounting & Finance such as auditing or strategic business analysis. At this point, students studying at Higher Education Institutions in the UK could choose to take an industry placement in order to apply the theoretical concepts and the acquired knowledge to practice in the professional environment. The next stage of this degree is dedicated to further-developing students’ knowledge of financial and management accounting. Optional modules might enable students to specialize in a particular area of their choice such as auditing or taxation in some countries like the UK.

Masters’ degrees in Accounting & Finance usually take between 12 and 18 months to complete depending on the country that students choose for their studies.

Research-based degrees, such as MPhil and PhD, can take anywhere between 1 and 7 years depending on the country and type of degree. MPhil degrees in Accounting & Finance in the UK usually take 12 months if it is studied full-time and 24 months for part-time studies. PhD degrees in the UK, on the other hand, take about 36 months to complete if studying full-time and 72 months for a part-time program. In the US, students may be required to dedicate between 4 and 7 years on their degree.

    Making learning easy

This school truly lives up to its name. The teaching style and lecture halls are ideal for students. The halls are very conducive and the lecturer are well equipped with knowledge.
The disadvantage of the school is simply the unconducive state of the school hostel, which is what I dislike the most about it.

    Very very impactful

Is a learning Ground and gives the students opportunities to be creative and rediscovering themselves. For me there was no dislike basically every experience is very normal for me as a student then.
My lecturers were putual except for a few of them but generally they were very dedicated.
Not forgetting the strick one time or the other that delayed for a few months aside that it was a graceful journey. And I would recommend anyone to school there if they ever need a review here is my honest opinion UNN is one of the best schools in the eastern region of Nigeria.

    My Experience in Higher Institutions

I recently completed my degree in business education from the great citadel of learning university of Nigeria UNN and i must say that my experience was a mixed bag. I had the privilege of learning from some exceptional professors who were truly passionate about their subjects. They went above and beyond to ensure that we understood the material and were always available to answer. The institution provided ample opportunities for research and hands-on learning, which helped me develop valuable skills and build my confidence. The campus was a melting pot of cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, which made for a rich and enriching learning environment. The administration could be slow to respond to student concerns, and the paperwork process was often cumbersome and frustrating. While the institution had some excellent facilities, there were times when resources were scarce, and we had to make do with outdated equipment or limited access to certain materials. The academic workload was intense, and there were times when I felt overwhelmed and struggling to keep up.

Overall, my experience in higher institutions was a valuable one that helped me grow both academically and personally. While there were certainly challenges and frustrations along the way, I appreciate the opportunities that I had and the relationships that I formed.

Is it really worth the stretch?

” Last last school na scam” is a popular Nigerian saying which typically means “Going to school is fraud or Going to school is a waste of time”
Judging by this saying I would say although it seems that way due to the current high rate of unemployment in Nigeria, my university speaks differently.
It says otherwise in terms of how it’s students are shaped, ranging from their lectures to extracurricular activities. In my University, you have a billion and one chances to prove that saying wrong due to the extreme amount of opportunities it provides for its students directly or indirectly.
Directly, it creates various events where it’s students who have thrived during the academic sessions are to be rewarded through academic sponsorships, financial sponsorship and many others. Thereby creating an avenue of healthy competition among the students which in turn boosts students to increase there academic performance, increasing their chances of better employment opportunities. Also the visits or reunions of old students comes with much excitement because there is always an upscale of motivation from their talks, tips, rewards and much more.
Again indirectly, my university tends to stretch its students by stressing them. Although this can sound unethical but I view it in a way that, the stress stretchs us, leaving such with a tougher skin and mindset to face the outer world once we graduate. I can proudly say that I have never met a University of Nigeria graduate that hasn’t made something of his/herself unless they just recently graduated ( which by the way they are still outstanding). Then comes the people you will meet, sets and sets of unique mindsets, all Impact in ways I can’t quantify. As the saying goes “Your net worth is determined by network”.
Now, getting to what I feel they can do better is the extension of the available accommodation for its students. It’s no more news to people that a student educational achievement is greatly affected by their accommodation or environment, with that being said I would love if more action can be taken into providing adequate accommodation for a larger fraction (if not all) of its students at affordable prices.
Also although I see the stretch as an advantage “too much of everything is not good”. Therefore they should try to create a better system of doing things in terms of clearances, …
I can’t possibly put an end to this review without stating how passionate some lecturers are to impacting all round knowledge in their students which is really remarkable. I can say when looking for a human definition of this saying “Anything worth doing, is worth doing well”, be sure to take your search to University of Nigeria lecturers.
With that being said, my university which University of Nigeria is worth the shot and yes it is worth the right amount of stretch.

    Exceptional

The University of Nigeria Nsukka offers a diverse range of academic programs with a reputable faculty. Its campus facilities are adequate, including libraries, labs, and sports amenities. My student life is vibrant with numerous extracurricular activities and clubs. The university boasts notable alumni achievements, but there’s room for improvement in career services. Overall, UNN provides a fulfilling academic and social experience, though areas like career support could be enhanced.

    University of Nigeria

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu is a really good federal university. The lecture halls are well ventilated for the students to feel comfortable. The hostel accommodation is quite okay but needs some renovation.

Either ways, I go to school!

I’m not going to fool you. UNN is a wonderful school, but it does have its pros and cons. My favorite is the freedom the university experience gives me, unlike a private college. Lecturers are fair enough, however, not great! Since UNN is located in the East, the environment is very cool, your perfect state for retirement. What I love the most is the thick skin UNN allows you to develop. Your stuff is going to get stolen a few times, your heart may even get snatched by a few playboys (I must warn you ahead of time). Overall, you are going to enjoy your University experience at UNN. You just have to learn to adapt and avoid complaining. Else, you’ll find yourself hating college before you even get through half of the first semester. Lol.
