View moreI am pursuing a masters degree here at University of Waikato and am an international student. While the campus and location is nothing special, the opportunity to study in New Zealand is unparalleled. With a central location in Hamilton, it is easy to explore (if you have a car) much of the North Island from here.
My program is largely self-guided, so if you are not a strong independent worker, then it is not the program for you. You will need to know how to ask questions of both your professors and school administrators. However, I thrive in an independent environment and I have an incredibly supportive thesis supervisor, so this university was a great fit for me! I get to study exactly what I want to be studying, and I have the academic support to do so.
If you are also an international student, be warned that there is next to no financial support options for you to attend uni here. I got very lucky and received the *only* scholarship I was eligible for but it did not cover much, and I have not been able to apply for university funding for my research either. Other than that, my academic experience has been quite positive!
View moreUniversity of Waikato is a good place to study at. In my experience I found both staff and students to be friendly and supportive throughout my time there.
There was a flexi option to study online which was awesome as I moved back to my hometown during Covid, so I was able to continue my studies.
Great facilities and food options on campus and in the area, and lots of opportunities to make friends, either in class or by joining club/s.
Coming from Auckland, I wasn’t too sure about what I would expect from Waikato Uni, however, it definitely exceeded my expectations.
Besides all my classes, which were great and gave relevant information to the time we live in today, the many student activities presented plenty of opportunities to meet and connect with people from all over NZ and around the world. This was fun and I enjoyed the relationships I made.
UoW offered flexible learning during and after the big Covid lockdowns which allowed me to complete my studies from my family home, which has been a huge advantage.
Overall, UoW is an awesome Uni to study at with supportive staff, driven students and an awesome student life/ culture.
