at University of Malawi - UNIMA

University of Malawi is one such a place l admired since my High school. Fortunately l landed an opportunity in 2011 to study Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), the then Polytechnic College. I loved the atmosphere at the compass. However, my studies didn’t go well as l expected. Coming from a poor home, with no financial backup for resources to aid my studies made it much difficult for me to study well. The Department of Education and Media Studies at the university doesn’t have adequate resources for practical training such as computers, recorders and cameras. Self-centered and lazy lecturers complicated the programme more. I still remember how one of our Economics lecturers was determined to fail the whole class because one of our classmates refused to be his girlfriend. He did it, and this affected everyone. We tried to follow all the protocols but only got frustrated as a class. Our class believed in team work, and thus how we managed to complete the programme.
To be honest, l didn’t also like the idea of scheduling internship program in the third year of our studies. In 2013, we went for a three-months internship. By the time we graduated in 2015, the same media companies we were deployed to refused to extend our internship program.
High level of corruption, theft and politics also delayed our graduation. We were supposed to finish our four year programme in 2014 but it took us 5 years to complete.
However, l must say University of Malawi is still the best. The Department of Education and Media Studies can do much better because only a few changes have been made recently.
