My experience at University of Pavia lasted only one year as I was there for my Erasmus exchange. Although I had many other options to choose from I picked Pavia for the destination of my Italian adventure and I do not regret the decision as it matched my expectations.
I studied at the Department of Humanities having lectures related to linguistics, translation and communication. The theoretical courses matched my expectations while some of the practical ones were overcrowded and I found it hard for the whole group to fully benefit from the class.
UNIPV is one of the most ancient universities in Europe where you can really feel inspired to develop personally and to study. At the same time you can get the feeling of the student vibe as 20% of the people living there are students. You can expect to get quality education and great time with your friends.
From an Erasmus perspective there were a regular cultural, travelling and party activities arranged by a student organization. I also found the communication with my Erasmus supervisor easy as she did not cause any problems with the learning agreement changes that occurred during my stay. Most of the professors were also showing their understanding and willing to help if needed. There were some exceptions but overall experience was great.
Logistically speaking Pavia is a small city where it is easy to get from your accommodation place to the building of your faculty. It was quite easy to find a place to stay as you can chose from different options (renting from locals, public and private student dormitories) although comparing to the south the prices are rather expensive.
It is also well connected to different parts of Italy and other countries as it takes around 20 minutes to reach Milan and continue your journey from there.
Summing up Pavia is a charming city with a great student vibe – if this is a kind of place you are looking for it is definitely worth giving a try.
