Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is well known as the ‘campus of the people,’ where its academic community is recognized for being close to the people, supporting them, and delivering real contributions to society. UGM also highly upholds harmony within diversity.
View moreIn my opinion, UGM is one of the best universities in Indonesia, boasting a strong academic reputation and a campus atmosphere that shapes the character of its students. In addition to the quality of its faculty and facilities, UGM is also known for its strong sense of community and social responsibility. It focuses not only on intellectual intelligence but also on teaching people’s values.
In my opinion, despite UGM’s reputation and extensive alumni network, there are still challenges to overcome, such as ensuring equal distribution of facilities across faculties, a sometimes convoluted bureaucracy, and the need to be more adaptable to technological developments and the global workplace.
For me, UGM is not just a university, but a symbol of struggle and dedication. Many national figures have emerged from this campus, demonstrating that studying at UGM means preparing oneself not only for personal success but also for broader benefits to society.

Dislikes (Things I dislike about UGM)
Bureaucracy – sometimes considered quite complicated and time-consuming.
Fierce Competition – getting into and excelling at UGM is not easy and can be stressful.
Student Overcrowding – the large number of students can sometimes make the facilities feel crowded.
Facilities are uneven – some faculties have excellent facilities, while others are limited.
Location – although Yogyakarta is convenient, some people feel far from major industrial centers.
I recommend Gadjah Mada University (UGM) for anyone wishing to pursue higher education with guaranteed academic quality. UGM has a national and international reputation, competent teaching staff, and a campus environment that supports the development of knowledge and character. Furthermore, UGM’s strong culture of social awareness will shape students into individuals who are not only intelligent but also dedicated.
View moreStudying at Universitas Gadjah Mada was a deeply enriching experience, both academically and personally. The Philosophy program encouraged critical thinking, open discussion, and a global outlook, skills that continue to shape how I approach communication and problem-solving today. The lecturers were knowledgeable and approachable, and many courses offered a balance between classical thought and contemporary relevance.
What I liked most was the vibrant student community and the campus culture that promotes activism, collaboration, and intellectual freedom. UGM’s diverse environment also allowed me to connect with students from different parts of Indonesia and abroad, making my learning experience even more dynamic.
That said, some administrative processes (like course enrollment or paperwork) were slow and often lacked clear communication. I believe there’s still room for improvement in terms of digital infrastructure and student services.
Overall, I would definitely recommend UGM, especially for students who value critical inquiry, social engagement, and a strong academic reputation in Southeast Asia. It’s a place that challenges your thinking while grounding you in a supportive, purpose-driven community.
