Studying English Literature under the UGC CBCS curriculum has been a mixed experience for me. On one hand, the syllabus itself is remarkable, offering exposure to incredible texts across periods and genres. For which, I am really grateful.
However, the way the system functions often undermines the true value of this curriculum. The focus is heavily textbook based, with exams rewarding long, predictable answers rather than critical thought or original interpretation. Individuality and freedom of perception are rarely encouraged. In my experience, many students attended classes only for attendance and not out of interest in learning. And the system seemed to be designed to enable that.
What I missed most was an environment that nurtures curiosity, debate and independent exploration of ideas. The structure pushes students to chase a degree rather than pursue knowledge.
Overall, I would not personally recommend this program for those seeking a dynamic, discussion driven education. But for those who are comfortable with textbook oriented learning and conventional examinations, it may serve its purpose.
The University of Calcutta provided me with a solid academic foundation and opportunities for personal growth. The faculty members were knowledgeable and approachable, always ready to guide students—especially Professor Chinmoy Guha whose expertise in french literature is unparalleled. The campus environment fostered a sense of community, with vibrant student activities and cultural events. However, some infrastructural upgrades and administrative improvements could further enhance the overall experience. Overall, my time at the University of Calcutta was both enriching and memorable, shaping me for future challenges and opportunities.
