The University of Ostrava’s Department of English and American Studies stands out for its exceptional faculty. I was choosing between two universities, and I am incredibly happy I chose the University of Ostrava. I would never change my decision. This university has opened so many doors abroad, including summer schools (Korea), mobility programmes (Cyprus), and traineeships. I have also had the opportunity to be part of many events as a student. What I particularly appreciate is the personal approach of the teachers. They know us by our names, not just as numbers, and understand us personally. This makes the courses a much better experience. If you are a diligent student who completes all your work, the teachers will always be accommodating and helpful when needed. My classmates and the whole department act as a unit, and I love that we meet every month to enjoy time together. If the University of Ostrava is on your list, just pick this one!

My experience at the University of Ostrava has been genuinely meaningful. It’s one of those places where you don’t just attend classes — you actually feel like you fit in. The atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s easy to find your rhythm as a student here.

What I appreciate most is the teachers. Every lecturer I’ve met is knowledgeable, passionate, and clearly enjoys sharing what they know — and that makes every class feel engaging instead of stressful. The subjects also connect well to different future paths, whether you’re into linguistics, literature, or practical language usage, so you feel like what you study genuinely supports the career you want.

The study schedule doesn’t feel overwhelming. When you manage your time well, you can study, work, and still enjoy life without burning out. That balance matters.

The faculties are spread across the city, which gives you this fun feeling that the whole of Ostrava is your campus. Moving between buildings becomes a natural part of discovering the city itself.

At times, it can feel a bit strange not knowing Czech in a place where most people are Czech locals. But the international student community is growing, and the university is clearly putting effort into making us feel supported and comfortable. You never feel completely alone — there’s always someone who will help you.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. It’s a university where you can feel at home, grow academically, and enjoy a city that becomes part of your everyday life.

Honestly, had a great time during my 3 years of study there.
We were a very tight-knit group in our class, which contributed a lot to the enjoyment of myuniversity life – I had friends to study with, to hang out with after classes and to consult academic things and subjects with.
As per the university – it had a lot of social events which I joined often, and there were so many opportunities to study abroad with a scholarship that it sounded too good!
As per professors – some of them were really enthusiastic and laid back, i think fondly on some of them and their classes. You could see that most of them were interested in the success of the students.

I think that the highlight of the university is the personal approach, the comfortable athmosphere and how much they support and value students. It also wants to attract students in unique ways – which is why they offer some unique offers – for example unique mobility programmes that are not present at other Czech universities. I enjoyed my time at the University of Ostrava.

I really enjoy studying English, I would highlight the literature classes with Dr. Beneš the most, and the British history classes with Dr. Kopecký were also very interesting (unfortunately, he no longer teaches, he now represents us as the rector 💙).

As a second year student at the faculty of arts I can say that I am proud of my school, though scattered around the city I find the study environment and availability of different mobilities a huge plus, I myself couldn’t attend any of them because of my status as a client of a children’s home, which makes it harder for me do so, though I would love to.
