Even though my course was in English, learning the local language is essential. Living in Warsaw, even as the capital, can feel quite isolated if you only speak English. While most people under 30 are likely to converse in English, you will encounter difficulties when dealing with official matters such as dealing with the police, government offices, shops or transport inspectors, as English is not commonly spoken in these contexts. The Polish people are very proud of their heritage, and making an effort to speak their complex language earns you a lot of respect.
