Engineering is tough, but very rewarding

As an engineer, first year is largely dedicated to getting students all on the same page pre-requisite wise, and weeding out those who don’t have the stomach to continue when the going gets rough. The program isn’t easy, there isn’t much support, and you just have to grind through it. But once you get to second year (even if you don’t get your top discipline choice), the future looks a lot brighter: you finally have a direction towards an exciting career, and a group of likeminded people on the same journey as yourself. I know many people that dropped out, and as someone who has failed a course as well, I wouldn’t recommend UBC if you just want to go into engineering to make the money or to have a “fun time while getting a degree on the side” – this is a recipe for heartbreak. Despite this, there is so much more to life at UBC than the academics, and the sooner you find the balance between school and a life outside of it, the happier you will be here.
