What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    The beauty of

Ottawa is a beautiful place to live and the campus is gorgeous. The buildings are quite nice and everything is very close together. The courses at uOttawa are overall well-run and interesting, with plenty of courses that align with varying fields of interest. The campus life is vibrant and full of opportunities to get involved!

    The new science building.

My overall opinion would be average, they are neither the worst nor truly excel at anything. The University administration is overworked and understaffed, as a result any request you submit needs to be submitted multiple times as they continuously lose documents. The professors in many departments are out of touch and are not always teaching material they care about which is reflected in their classes. Many of the first-year classes have a sink or swim mentality which is not conducive to learning.

    World's largest Bilingual University

University of Ottawa is one of the leading universities in Canada. Based in the heart of the Capital of Canada, the university provides excellent co-op and research opportunities. For me personally, I have found this university to be increasingly academically rigorous and efficient in its academic abilities. Professors want you to succeed and help you in every step of your academic journey.
Courses here are offered in both English and French, making it the world’s largest bilingual university. This also enables the increment in diversity and the international experience.

    So Good

I love Ottawa. it was so much fun! I am in my fourth year and almost done with my journey! my profs are so good! however, a lot of the older ones mark way too hard. there also aren’t enough classes for all of the students. I have classes that I need but they did not have room for me in them.

COVID Ruined Uni, Tuition is a Nightmare

Tuition is ridiculous of the education you are receiving. Campus always smells a little weird this year. Overall you can get some good profs and some bad ones, but I wouldn’t trust their website as it seems like its dated 15 years.

    Interactive

Uottawa has allowed people to do online schooling as a lot of people are not comfortable with face to face at the moment. They are also extremely understanding when it comes to students asking for help and often do their best to create an environment where students aren’t scared to learn/reach out. One problem I have with Uottawa is the lack of diversity at times, often they cater more towards the French speaking part of classes and have more opportunities, along with this there are simply not that many people of color compared to white people.

    UOttawa Fine Arts

This program is really good for students who have a focused path. If you already know exactly what field you wanna go into within the world of visual arts and you’re not looking to experience different forms of media this program is perfect for you. Although you do have to take English and Philosophy courses, they aren’t too bad. This program is not offered in French Immersion but you can still take courses in French if you’d like. Materials for the courses may not seem too expensive but, they do add up over the course of the semester. Especially when repurchasing things like the film for your camera or paint. Overall this program is good if you’re looking for a focused art program. If you’re not sure where you’re going just yet I would recommend a bachelor’s in Visual Arts. Not Fine Arts.
