What Is a Modern Languages Degree?

Nowadays, more and more students start to pursue a degree in modern languages. A modern languages degree is not only related to learning a new language but also understand the cultural context of the countries in which the language is spoken.

Candidates studying a modern languages course will also be given knowledge and experience of the political and historical contexts of a particular region. On top of that, the use of literary texts and media will develop not only their skills but also their perception about learning a different language.

Benefits of a Modern Languages Degree

Due to the increased globalisation, there is a high demand for modern languages graduates. The ability to communicate in another language and understand its background is a major advantage.

Modern Language courses are designed to give students transferable skills, which can be applied in all areas of activity. Candidates will have high communication skills, accompanied by data collection and interpreting skills, which are appreciated by employers, regardless of your career choice.

Modern Languages Degree Structure

Modern Languages Degrees are four years commitments, out of which one semester or a year should be spent abroad – in a partnered institution. This gives students the opportunity to practice the language they are studying and understand a new culture.

Modern Languages is a degree that can be studied either as a single honour degree or a joint honour degree. This gives students the ability to combine modern language with another course such as politics, literature, history and many others.

I recommend UdeM for its diversity of services. Both psychological help and integration activities into student life seem accessible to me. I have always had good service. In addition, my experience with professors from various faculties was positive. It is easy to communicate with them by email or in person and receive help from them with their courses or with the program. Then, generally speaking, I am satisfied with the campus facilities. Some buildings need renovation, but everything is accessible. There are several cafeterias, libraries and rest areas in different areas of the campus.

A cultural immersion at home and international oportunities pool

The Asian Studies Bachelor’s program at UDEM is fulfilling and more than I could have hoped for. The teachers and different events are all guiding you toward an international career and offering you opportunities to immerse yourself in your studies. A variety of teachers from different backgrounds and countries. Allowing you to learn about Asia from abroad and expert-driven perspective. Not only, but the opportunity to participate in an exchange was also well structured and the best way possible to understand and experience Asia.
Keep in mind though, that to give yourself the best chances possible for a career, you got to give it your all in language learning, as it opens a lot more doors if you come out of the program fluent in either Mandarin, Japanese or Korean. 100% recommend

    UofM, a beautiful experience.

The University of Montreal is welcoming. The campus is located near subway stations; it is therefore easily accessible. Many buildings have been renovated to provide better classrooms.

The education I received was of high quality. In literature, students have access to very interesting resources. The CRILCQ and the Figura antenna of UofM, among others, organize many events.

I enjoyed my experience at the University of Montreal. That’s why, after obtaining my Baccalaureate, I chose to continue my studies at the graduate level at the same university.
