What is an Accounting & Finance degree?

An Accounting & Finance degree focuses on the management of monetary resources available to an organization. Such a degree is aimed at students who want to pursue careers in investment analysis, management, banking, auditing, consulting and financial management. It teaches students how to assess the assets and liabilities of an organization financially and manage the financial risk of their activity.

Accounting & Finance covers the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting and finance but also includes other aspects of the business activity, such as financial management and control, corporate finance, company accounts, investment and business law. Optional module options provided by different universities around the world often allow students to specialize in a particular area such as auditing, taxation, etc.

Benefits of an Accounting & Finance degree

The completion of an Accounting & Finance degree comes along with numerous benefits. Students develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly demanded by employers in both the private and the public sector and result in graduates often finding employment in large multinational organizations that offer professional services such as PwC, KPMG and Deloitte. On top of that, established companies around the world offer excellent and well-structured graduate schemes, which help Accounting & Finance graduates to kick-start their careers.

Accounting & Finance degrees are mostly practically oriented. They allow students to put the knowledge and skills they acquire on a daily basis to practice through simulated and real-life business accounts management and work placement opportunities.

Most Accounting & Finance degrees are professionally accredited by professional bodies, such as ACCA, AIA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, which provides students with the opportunity to become chartered accountants. Students gain professional qualifications in accountancy, which eliminates the need for additional certifications after graduation.

Due to the nature of the Accounting & Finance Degree, which complements business-related subjects, students often have the opportunity to complete a joint honours degree.

Accounting & Finance Degree Structure

An Accounting & Finance degree’s duration varies depending on the country and degree level. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting & Finance can be completed in three years. However, universities also offer students the option to take a sandwich course, which allows them to undertake a year-long placement between their second and third year, which extends the course to four years. Four years is the regular time of completion of this degree in other countries, such as the United States.

The first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance introduces the core principles of accounting and finance, including financial accounting, management accounting and finance as well as economics and business law. The second year’s focus is usually on managerial and business economics, financial control, corporate finance and company accounts, but optional modules might enable students to pursue their interests in other aspects of Accounting & Finance such as auditing or strategic business analysis. At this point, students studying at Higher Education Institutions in the UK could choose to take an industry placement in order to apply the theoretical concepts and the acquired knowledge to practice in the professional environment. The next stage of this degree is dedicated to further-developing students’ knowledge of financial and management accounting. Optional modules might enable students to specialize in a particular area of their choice such as auditing or taxation in some countries like the UK.

Masters’ degrees in Accounting & Finance usually take between 12 and 18 months to complete depending on the country that students choose for their studies.

Research-based degrees, such as MPhil and PhD, can take anywhere between 1 and 7 years depending on the country and type of degree. MPhil degrees in Accounting & Finance in the UK usually take 12 months if it is studied full-time and 24 months for part-time studies. PhD degrees in the UK, on the other hand, take about 36 months to complete if studying full-time and 72 months for a part-time program. In the US, students may be required to dedicate between 4 and 7 years on their degree.

    Exceptional institution

Western University, an exceptional institution, is well-known for its demanding academic curricula and dynamic atmosphere. The university provides superb educational possibilities, cutting-edge infrastructure, and exceptionally proficient faculty members across a range of disciplines. Facilities here are first rate and accessible to every student of the institution. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Western University to anyone.

    BMOS Honor Specialization in Finance

Demographic: According to me and my friends’ experience, BMOS program, in general, have a lot of students who don’t know what they want to do with their life. We have a lot of lost business student.

Main Building: BMOS students have most of their courses at social science building (SSC). A lot of us hate this building because of the depressing atmosphere, lack of sunlight, and ugly design. However, it does equip with a lot of sitting areas and study rooms. It can be a resort for your group project meetings and grindings for exams. A geographic advantage is that SSC is very close to University Community Centre (UCC), where have shops, food places and lounge. A lot of events happen at UCC lounge, such as job fair and club fair. SSC is also very close to Weldon Library, where most people study.

Courses: To be honest, business, especially in university, really needs self-study. Not all profs are reliable for good quality education or be responsive to your questions. I’m not good at math, so Econ mandatory classes were my pain in the ass. To get into Ivey, Bus 2257 is basically a must. I personally think it’s one of the most interesting courses in BMOS and really helped me to get more confidence in talking in public and contribute in team work.

    study hard, play hard

My overall experience at Western University is honestly pretty good. I have had many extracurricular activities while studying for the past two years. If you care about the university’s ranking, Western University also ranked much better than before. There are also a lot of resources on campus, and if you need any kind of support, you can always find a place to solve it.

Most importantly, I met many good people here and we studied and partied together to get into Ivey.

Some bird courses I would like to share: math 1229, 1228; cal 1000, data sci 1000, poli sci 2144, 2141, 2142; classical studies 2300, 2301, etc.

    Great resources for frosh!

As a first-year, I was nervous before moving in, about what the environment would be like and the difficulty of my classes. Upon moving-in, I was offered many resources to help this transition process which made the process stress-free!

    Good overall

I’ve formed a great community within my faculty and most of the professors are nice. The only issue is with the course offerings being so limited, it makes it hard to do summer school if you want to fast track or double major.

    Inclusive and Amazing Culture

I have enjoyed my past two years at the Ivey Business School at Western University so much. The format of the program is what really appealed to me, by getting the opportunity to study something else I was interested in in my first two years really helped me become a well-rounded student. Coming to Ivey, it was as if I entered a whole new world, the tight-knit community at Ivey is what especially stood out in my first year of studies. The special thing about Ivey is that the learning structure is almost entirely case-based this allows students to make real world applications and learn about challenges that occur in actual companies across the globe. Overall, Ivey really spends time curating a wonderful student experience that values a high quality of student life, while taking active measures to ensure equity, diversity and inclusion.

    Surviving first year

I personally would recommend grouping all your classes together during the day. That way you get them all done at once and either have the morning to yourself or have the evening off. Make your professors your friends! It helps a lot when you need to explanations and tips on certain topics. Make friends with the people in each class as well so that you have someone to study and bounce ideas off of. Use your weekdays wisely so that you have time to relax on weekends.

    Where I am now

I took accounting and economics in school at Western. Majored in both. The life at Western was something beyond crazy. I was there when NELK came for FOCO and actually featured in that video they did too. The school was fun, pretty great people for the most part, a few bad apples like everywhere else, but majority great. I met my girlfriend there who I am living with now (about to propose and hopefully tie the knot). The education was pretty good. Decent professors, good material, lots of Co-Op options for most programs. They do focus on building a better future for students, just comes down to who will actually apply themselves. I am happy and doing well. Financially pretty good since I do own the house my girlfriend and I are living in. Take Co-Op if you get the opportunity, seriously its worth it. Even if that Co-Op sucks, still do it for a little change and you’ll remember the education part of school as doing something that is in your field of interest.

Massive traditional Canadian university in a Uni Town

Western is a huge school. In saying this, it has many pros and cons directly related to its size. First of all of your a science or research student, the resources and facilities available to you are second only to American Ivey’s and let’s not forget how cheep Canadian schools are in an international context. The huge size however can be daunting and lead to challenges at first. Western has a reputation for being a party school and this is certified the case hahah. London although a slightly shabby city, is centered around students with extensive night life, walking trails, a central river, and a stunningly manicured campus. The campus is huge but completely connected, it can take >20min to walk end to end. In terms of reputation, the Ivey school is consistently ranked #1 in Canada, and our grad school are extensive including Med, Law, Dentistry, and The arts. Housing is a bit expensive to most but a bargain compared to a Toronto. However don’t be fooled into think you live in Toronto, you don’t, in facts, it’s rather arduous to get there although if you get the right train it takes about an hour. If you have an interest I guarantee there’s a club for it, no jokes Western is serious about extracurriculars. If sports are your thing we have the largest indoor gym in Canada and our varsity teams have an extensive list of Olympians among them. If you’re looking for a highly social, academics focused school and don’t mind the size Western could be for you. Once again if you think size doesn’t matter, remember you’ll have no relationship with the prof of your 1000 person class so it’s something to consider. Alternatively, students at Kings uni or burschia uni which are affiliates have access to all western facilities and classes and even graduate with a western degree and the class sizes are much smaller and much more student focused. Food for thought.
