My journey at the University of Buea’s Journalism department was a whirlwind of learning, challenges, and growth. The program offered a solid foundation in the fundamentals of journalism, including news writing, reporting, editing, and media law. However, the real learning often happened outside the classroom.

The university’s campus, nestled amidst the lush greenery of Mount Cameroon, provided a serene and inspiring environment for study. However, the limited resources and outdated infrastructure were significant drawbacks. The library, though well-stocked, often lacked essential reference materials, and the internet connectivity was unreliable, hindering research and online learning.

The faculty, a mix of experienced journalists and academics, brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the classroom. Their passion for the field was infectious, and they encouraged critical thinking and independent reporting. However, the large class sizes often limited individual attention, and the workload could be overwhelming at times.

Practical experience was a highlight of the program. The university’s radio station, UBC FM, offered hands-on opportunities to hone reporting and presenting skills. Internships at local media houses further enriched our learning and provided valuable industry exposure.

Despite its challenges, the University of Buea’s Journalism program equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career in journalism. The program’s emphasis on critical thinking, ethical reporting, and social responsibility has shaped my approach to journalism.
