I studied Political Science and International Relations at AUBG, and I genuinely think it’s one of the best choices in the region if you’re looking for a U.S.-style liberal arts education without leaving Eastern Europe.
What stood out the most to me was the diversity—not just in nationalities, but also in thought. I had classmates from all over Europe, Central Asia, and the U.S., which made class discussions more interesting and helped me broaden my perspective.
The professors are experienced and accessible. Most hold degrees from the U.S. or Western Europe, and they genuinely care about student growth. I appreciated how classes were more discussion-based than lecture-heavy, which pushed me to think critically and engage more deeply with the material.
Campus life is active without being overwhelming. There are clubs for everything—debate, journalism, business, arts—and it’s easy to get involved. Blagoevgrad isn’t a big city, but it’s safe, student-friendly, and affordable, which makes day-to-day life easier.
One thing to note: the workload can feel intense if you’re double majoring (which many students do), and the bureaucracy in student services could be more efficient. But overall, the quality of education and the tight-knit international community make it well worth it.
