What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Industrial design program experience

Overall, I would rate the Industrial Design programme very positively. I like the programme because it gives me a lot of hands-on experience in the field, not just theoretical knowledge. Through different projects, I am able to develop in many aspects of the profession, such as concept development, material experimentation, technical skills, and critical thinking. The programme helps me understand how design works in real contexts and allows me to grow both creatively and professionally.

A demanding but rewarding programme - DEVINE

Currently I am a 2nd year student at the Digital Design and Development Program. It is challenging, but in a good way because it pushes you to grow both technically and creatively. The eduction is quite practically-oriented. You also get to work on real projects that simulate professional situations, which helps you understand what working in the digital industry is actually like.
The classes are well-structured and cover a wide range of skills, from design and front-end development to UX/UI, etc. The lecturers give concrete feedback and take the time to help you improve at consults. The workload can be intense at times but at the end results are always very rewarding and worth it.
I would recommend DEVINE to students who are passionate about digital design and development and want a program that prepares them well for a career in the field.

    Howest DAE - IGP

It is a very demanding place, you have to work a lot but the reward is worthy. Being able to connect with a company in your internship and the group projects are one of the most valuable things from the DAE programme.

    Great place to learn

The students and the atmosphere are great. Most of the teachers know what they are doing. And what I like the most is that you really get to learn everything from zero and you can specialise in subjects you like the most.

    Welcoming and versatile

I’m about to finish my bachelor in Howest, and looking back at the 3 years spent studying here, I can definitely say that the education offered here is very professional and up to date. I would have never expected that in only few years I would be able to learn coding and making good digital products at such a high level as I am doing now. The studies were very intensive, and I see that a lot of people extend their education to 4 years (that’s also a bit of a warning for those who expect to definitely study only 3 years). I have not much bad things to say, except how sometimes we – Digital Design and Development students – feel a bit left out from Howest, because we’re not located in the Howest area, and in order to get the same opportunities as our other peers, have we have to travel to the main campus (Penta). Other than that, I’ve met so many new people from different parts of the world, so many memories. I recommend 😉
