University of Minnesota (reviews)

UMN, as both the largest and oldest campus in the University of Minnesota system, is divided into 19 colleges and schools covering a wide range of subject areas such as Biological Sciences, Design, Law, Liberal Arts, Medicine, Science and Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine. Nearly 4,000 faculty members are employed by the university across its colleges and schools – teaching and supporting undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional students. The student body in total amounts to approximately 50,000. As well as its taught programmes, UMN is heavily involved in research and is categorised as a ‘Doctoral University – Highest Research Activity’ by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university puts significant funds towards the research conducted there, and in the past helped with the invention of the pacemaker.

Life as a UMN Student

With such a high number of students comes a high number of student activities on offer. UMN students have a choice of over 900 student organisations in which to take part, there are nearly 3,500 students who are part of Greek Life (fraternities and sororities) at the university, and there are over 20 varsity teams.

As for accommodation, there are options both on and off campus. Around 90% of first-year students, though, live on campus in arrangements such as residence halls or Living Learning Communities.

The Students

Over 3,500 UMN students study abroad, and more than 7,000 students at UMN itself are international students, with students coming from approximately 130 nations.

As for past students, UMN has a large alumni network which includes Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, two former Vice Presidents of the United States, and Bob Dylan – who himself is also a Nobel Prize winner.
