The human science department is one of the oldest in the Netherlands and offers a vast range of study programmes. The interdisciplinarity of the human science department has been a great plus. Different study departments work closely together and offer challenging inderdisciplinary curriculums. My study traject included courses from the conflict studies department, genderstudies, religious studies, international relations studies, history and even history of art courses in my first year.
In recent years Utrecht University has transformed into a international university. A wide range of studies previously taught in Dutch, are now taught in English. This is possitive in the long-term (more competitive in international academics), but I think the university is still in its developing fase which is not always in the benefit of the quality of education.
For me Utrecht University is a great university because it’s the perfect middle ground between ivy league type of education and public education. Teachers are approachable yet well-qualified, the courses are very interactive and the study facilities like the library are great and easy to use. The fees are afforable and eligibility is not only based on grades, motivation is often also key in the admission processes. This enhances the diversity among students, enables students to become increasingly ambitious during their studies (some students achieve great potential later on in their study traject) and makes the learning environment at the University of Utrecht genuinely pleasant.
