The degree that you build too!

    History
The University of Bologna is the oldest university in Europe. Historical for the faculty of letters, it now covers every area and is one of the best universities in Italy according to every ranking
    Teachings
In my course the level of education is undoubtedly high. Near Forlì there is the Tecnopolo, a structure of the University that deals with space research, where innovation is worked on. The spatial footprint is very relevant compared to the aeronautical one, given the prevalence of teachers in that sector. A methodical approach consolidated over the years is used in class: this ensures that, in the majority of cases, good fundamental knowledge is transmitted. However, sometimes the collaboration of the students is necessary, as some courses (especially among the initial ones) are necessarily general and tend to make one lose interest. There are several tutors in many subjects to help understanding and, given the small number of students, it is always possible to intervene in class or ask for an appointment with the processors in case of doubts. No practical activities are foreseen, except technical drawing by hand and computer courses, everything else is theoretical.
Having said that, the University of Bologna is in all rankings one of the best universities in Italy and in terms of aerospace engineering it is second only to the Polytechnics. As Bologna is at the center of the Motor Valley, the automotive applications of what is studied are immediate.
    Teachers
There are professors who are more or less likeable, more or less professional and more or less dutiful. In general, I’m sure that many believe in university education, therefore they are committed to class and to giving availability for individual receptions. Several promote activities outside of class for students’ personal growth. Some professors are very close to the students, others less so. All the professors are undoubtedly highly qualified and often talk about their work experiences in the field studied during the lessons. The willingness to do internships and thesis is also high.
    Student services
The offices offer excellent student services. There are many free courses and services to look for a job. Many Erasmus offers and in addition, a field trip is planned for third year bachelor and master students.
    Cost
The fee is around €2,300. It is important to pay on time, otherwise there are blackberries of €150. It’s a bit expensive compared to others I would say.
    Scholarships
There aren’t many scholarships, except for the ER.GO scholarship and scholarships for foreign students. In three years there has only been one scholarship that was based on merit.
    Students
The students are “few but good”. You manage to create a group, being just a few. Bologna is a university that boasts the highest number of foreign students, therefore internationality is on the agenda.
    Activities
In Forlì there are many extra-curricular activities that can be carried out together with associations, first of all EUROAVIA Forlì-Bologna. It is necessary to rely on these active associations to carry out activities outside the classroom.
    Final opinion
Bologna wasn’t my first option, but I’m happy I did the 3-year Bachelor’s degree at the university. I finally realized that I had missed many activities and opportunities that Bologna offered. Don’t do the same and immediately look for all the things you can do!

Excellent theoretical basis, lacks a little bit of practice

The master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Bologna offers a solid theoretical background in subjects like aerodynamics, structures, automatic control and so on. All the subjects are taught in English and some courses are done in collaboration with other European universities. These two facts make this course very attractive for international students. The commitment required to pass the exams is generally high and the subject may be too theoretical lacking practical work like group projects. Overall an excellent university to study aerospace engineering.

    Passionate professors and familiar environment

The program is good, there are a lot of very interesting courses. Maybe something people from abroad don’t expect is that there is almost nothing dealing with practice. All courses are theoretical but professors communicate their passion and make you understand that theory is necessary to have very deep knowledge. There are also some bad professors, too, but not in the important courses (for example the worst is in Economics). The environment is familiar, being the engineering buildings situated beside the airport, with the hills in front of, a little far from the city centre where the main university building is. The canteen is very good to me. I’m in my second year, but it seems to me that despite the fact that Forly is not a huge industrial town the opportunities to find a good internship and working opportunities after university is good.

    International course providing strong foundation

My experience was very good. Most of the professors are experts in their field and have links with international companies and institutes inside and outside Italy. I would push a bit more to the applied side of teaching, but the theoretical basis provided by the course is excellent. Therefore I would recommend it. Life in Forli is fine if you are looking for a small and calm city, but full of students.

    Lonely city and lonelier course

I may be biased since I am not an engineer, and I definitely chose the wrong course (I quit halfway through the first semester), but from my experience, I can safely say this is not a well-organised and well-structured course or university.

I felt completely detached from UNIBO since the Aerospace Engineering course is held in Forlì, not in Bologna. Forlì is a small, quiet, student-deprived town.
The courses were uninteresting, the professors all had awful English (except maybe one or two), the content was taught badly and in exhausting 2-3 hour lectures with little to no breaks. There were no demonstrations, no clubs, no laboratory experiences.
Information was not delivered and passed on to students, even the most fundamental of information regarding exams or coursework, necessary for the course, was not communicated properly or professionally.

I’d say a positive note is an area and some note of internationality. It is an open, English-only course and some international students are present. The course also has some pretty interesting and important companies associated so career prospects are easy to find if you survive the frankly ridiculous course.

Excellent course but it isn't perfect

I think the professors and the courses are great, there are a few exceptions but overall the quality is great. The facilities are good and there is a canteen and a library. The only problem is that from the center of Forlì you must take a bus line because the faculty is near the airport. The student life is good and the accommodation is not expensive. I think that this course offers excellent prospects for the future.

Much theory but I can't complain

I’ve been studying at the University of Bologna for the past 5 years, both for my Bachelor’s and my Master’s degree. I am aware that in Italy the Uni preparation is mostly based on theory, but I cannot complain. During these past years I met amazing professors that made me love their subjects. There were also some not-so-great professors in my curriculum, but thankfully they were a really limited number.

I must say that the engineering facilities are a bit far from the city center and the other faculties; however, we have many labs all around our classes! PhDs and researchers from many parts of the world use our space labs and mostly our super long wind tunnel! Do not expect to use these facilities during your courses. You’ll mostly use them while doing an internship/thesis on a specific subject (aerodynamics, microsatellites, etc)

Regarding the life in Forlì (yes the campus of Aerospace Engineering is in Forlì, not in Bologna): it is super nice, you can move around with your bike/on foot everywhere and there are many students studying languages, diplomatic sciences, economy, as well as medicine. There are many parties and also some clubs, people in Forlì definitely love going out for a drink at night.

As long as internships and thesis are concerned, you’ll have many opportunities to engage in technical activities abroad. Our professors have contacts pretty much everywhere, from North America to South Africa, and of course all around Europe. In addition to this, you can also decide to spend 1 year or just one semester abroad by applying to the Erasmus+ programme or to the Overseas one!

Looking back to my University years, I cannot explain to you how grateful I am for choosing this path. The professors and the colleagues brought me to be exactly where I needed to be. You’ll never find another University of this kind in Italy, a University where you can go out to grab a drink and to chat at night with PhD candidates and professors. This is an enriching environment that shaped me and I am sure will shape future students.

    Next to the airport

I chose this university mainly because it was the closest one to my house in which I could study aerospace engineering. For this degree, the campus is located in Forlì, a city that is very peaceful, also way too much. Activities for students are almost completely absent, and the city is generally quite empty and rainy most of the time. Aerospace engineering is not even located in the new modern campus in the city center with all other faculties, but it is next to the airport, together with Mechanical Engineering. The facilities are okay, but not very modern or spacious, also because the faculty doesn’t count a lot of students. The only study place in the faculty is a small room that some time ago had many broken chairs, that were replaced only because some students posted a paper on the wall asking to have new chairs. The new city center campus and the city libraries are better.
You can find any type of professor: some don’t explain themselves very well their subjects but, fortunately, in the last few years they are starting to be replaced by young professors who have a bit less experience but generally teach better. On the other hand, there are some experienced professors who are very knowledgeable and inspiring: in their lectures, you can feel they are passionate about what they teach and that they care about students. This makes you keen to learn more and more about those particular subjects.
The bachelor’s degree is not international, since the subjects are explained in Italian. I know in the master’s degree there are Erasmus students or full students from abroad because the course is taught in English, but I wouldn’t say the percentage is very high.
A good reason to study at this university is that there are some particular research topics in which the university is very advanced, like aerodynamics and turbulence, thanks to the CICLoPE laboratory in Predappio, which hosts one of the most important wind tunnels in the world. In general, in Italian universities the courses are very theoretical, so if you are looking for something more practical I would not advise you to study in Italy! However, it can on the contrary be a way to improve your theoretical knowledge and develop different skills than those ones you can generally develop abroad.
