As a healthcare management student at Winston Salem State University, I participated in a three-month spring internship at Novant Health Kernersville Emergency Department with Julie Schaefer as my preceptor. Novant’s purpose is to impact those around us and within us so that everyone has a sense of belonging and knows that they are a priority. Novant is very big on inclusion, teamwork, and personal excellence. Providing support and opportunities allows room for improvement and growth. My responsibilities this semester included: office management and receptionist duties, managing and coordinating employee documents, and developing support material. I also attended a lot of meetings throughout this internship and have gained more insight into healthcare management and business aspects.
My HCM curriculum and specifically two of my most impactful courses, Health Information Management and Professional Growth and Leadership in Healthcare have greatly prepared me for my internship. I have learned a lot from these courses like; professionalism in healthcare, leadership skills, technology and data systems, and providing quality patient care. Being able to use the skills and knowledge that I have learned throughout my HCM curriculum and putting it into practice at the hospital has given me a better learning experience at my internship site.
