Was absolutely fantastic. Life-changing place for many.
As a High school senior, I briefly considered not attending college. My parents weren’t going to be able to help me pay tens of thousands of dollars in tuition, and I was terrified to bear the weight of loans only payable via the uncertain prospect of a good job.
An acceptance letter from Bowdoin changed that. I did take a manageable amount in loans, which was more than the vast majority of Bowdoin’s fin-aid students require. And I quickly learned that a decent job was no longer uncertain.
From there, my life began transforming rapidly. Your shock at the existence of a place like Bowdoin will vary based on your prior experiences, but all who attend grow to appreciate the curiosity and kindness that is present within its classrooms and dining halls.
Not to say that is it perfect, or that my time there didn’t include moments of deep struggle. In fact, I knew many students that were cynical – felt the whole place was out-of-touch, from the “impractical” liberal arts curriculum to the overly pragmatic administration. Worthwhile concerns. But for those admitted who approach Bowdoin with a genuine curiosity, humility, and purpose, the promise of a good education will be realized; The world will be opened for you.
