What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Fantastic Community!

They say that people make Glasgow and they really do! Even more so they make the university. The University of Glasgow has such a fantastic community of friendly peers, engaging staff, and fantastic learning and social opportunities no matter where you look! There are so many social and academic societies you can be a part of. The course content is the perfect balance of enjoyable and academically challenging. My one complaint is that because it is such a large campus, it can be difficult to find out who to talk to if you need help or have a question. However, you will eventually find that person and they are quite helpful. Overall a fantastic university.

    Resources, resources, resources.

Even though our courses were restricted to mostly online lectures and private studying, we had a plethora of resources to help us support our notes. However, the resources are not as helpful to those that study better in a more personal setting, such as a classroom, or that would benefit from one on one support rather than through disjointed emails. For those that like to study at home, or that know how they learn best then this set-up will work amazing for them, but hopefully, there will be more of a balance in the next years due to circumstances.

Interesting and broad overview of Psychology

Psychology at the University of Glasgow excelled in its willingness to stay relevant, new and interesting. Research was ongoing and had a big focus on replication which is big problem faced in the psychology community.

The degree focused more heavily on the neurological side of psychology and additionally had the unexpected focus on statistics and visualizing data.
The course is brilliant if you want to pursue research psychology and gives you practical skills for this.

However, it is generalized so you get a broad qualification in psychology and probably will require further study if you want to work in the clinical side of Psychology.

It is a large course, so especially in the first years you need to work very independently and can feel less supported.
Seminars help reduce this as you have the opportunity to work with tutors in smaller groups.

    Multidisciplinary and multicultural student life

I hold a BA degree in Psychological Counselling. Being interested in psychology and mental health led me to choose the postgraduate programme of Global Mental Health at the University of Glasgow. The programme is quite unique since there are 2 or 3 programme similar to this programme in the world as I know. Being a part of one of the prestigious universities in the world and having a chance to take courses from expert people, I was highly satisfied to study in there. As a multidisciplinary course and multicultural people around the university provided me with the opportunity of meeting new people coming from different backgrounds and cultures and helped me to broaden my perspective. The programme and the related courses were mainly emphasized that the world needs more action than ideas and the people in living low and middle-income countries are required to attract more attention, particularly primary and mental health. Apart from social message, I was happy to complete my master programme by improving my skills and taking high-quality knowledge as well as how to use and spread them to the people in need. So, as a graduate student from the Uni of Glasgow with having MSc degree in Global Mental Health, I recommend the programme and the institution for the people seeking new adventures as well as developing their skills and knowledge.
