What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    Planning flexibility

The University of Applied Amsterdam offers a great program for STEM subjects, I myself studied IT and the flexibility of it all was my favourite part. After the first 1.5 years you have multiple choices in how you want to schedule and plan the rest of your studies, will you do an internship first, partake in a minor or themed semester. Thats up to the student. Next to that, the encouragement and support for studying abroad is great. The staff of the staff of the international office is informative and kind, and the school manages to neatly overview all the information of other universities they have partnered with and what the possibilities are for each student.

This ability to being able to plan your studies is absolutely great, the only thing is that less proactive students do not get the same experience studying as the students that try to get the most out of their time there.

Amsterdam Fashion Institute - for dedicated students only

I attended the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, which is a part of the University of Applied Sciences. I was following the Fashion Design programme, which is the hardest programme of the institute. It took me some time to get used to the heavy workload and the particularly high expectations of the teachers in terms of innovation and the quality of the delivered asignments. The teachers are dedicated to help the students do the best work they can, but only if they see that the students have the same dedication. In terms of facilities, the university is quite well equipped. There is a printing lab, a knitting room and a sewing room. In one of the other buildings of the university there is a lab with laser cutturs and 3D printers which is free to use for the students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Overall, I would recomment the course to my friends, but I would prepare them for the fact that it is not going to be an easy journey, and that most probably they are not going to have time to have a part-time job next to their studies.

    Perfect for applied sciences

Hogeschool van Amstedam is not considered a university in the Dutch educational system, although it does hold high education level degrees. More technical than academic, this school focuses on the professional fomartion of the students and work in partnership with Dutch companies, allowing the students to work on real projects with real clients.
