I completed the Audiovisual Communication degree at uc3m in 2018. Overall, I’d rate it as an ‘ok’ experience cause despite my disappointment with the program’s structure I do believe there’s other good parts that come along with the experience of studying at UC3M.
In general, I’d say the biggest downside is that the program constitutes mostly of a heavy theoretical part about the history of film and TV, which can be interesting in some classes but most of them just consist in memorizing a lot of content by heart for the evaluations. I found that many lectures lack the practical approach necessary to prepare the students for jobs in TV or film productions.
There are a few classes that I did enjoy and found useful, that offer a bit of that practical approach where you get to be in the production studio on campus, apply film theory to your own work, play around with cameras, develop your own radio episode with a team in a radio booth, etc. but it feels like a very minor part in comparison to the rest of the degree and you only get to scratch the surface of learning about media production and postproduction. Also, there’s some classes that are compulsory like economics or law which I didn’t find useful at all in relation to the program and ended up taking a lot of work to get over with.
All of this is very noticeable specially after graduation, where most of us find ourselves extremely unprepared for roles in current media productions. If that’s something you’re interested in, I’d recommend searching for another program way more practical and oriented towards current job positions.
On the other hand, I think the best part of the university is all the facilities and a very nice student environment with a constant flow of activities and workshops of different fields available. The resources at UC3M are, from my understanding, pretty good compared to other public universities with a similar communication degree. There’s camera equipment available for students to borrow and a radio and tv studio in the campus. Also, the library is a very modern building, quite big and has lots of film and tv content for rental, plus available computers to work. The rest of the spaces like the open-air gardens and the cafeterias are super nice as well and are very suitable for gatherings with other students.

I studied Audiovisual Communication a few years ago and I can say that it left me much to be desired in general.

Positively, I would highlight the abundance of group work that lowered individual weight, and the only two weeks of exams that allowed a lot of free time for the rest of the course.

But, in terms of content, I think that all of us who aspired to any kind of practical work were left with the desire to learn.

I do not know if it will have changed in these years, but it would be a good point to take into account.

I studied my four years Bachelor Degree in Communication Audiovisual in the Uc3m. In general, I would say that my experience was good, I met some nice people and the facilities around the campus were good, such as laptops, cameras, studios for practice…
However, I believe that the real experience we took wasn’t good enough, as I think that loads of subjects were really theoretical or generical for the field we wanted to be real professionals. Therefore, I think we all finished our studies but we weren’t ready enough to work professionally in the field of cinema without any extra specific formation.
Anyway, studying in uc3m helped me a lot to be an organised and constant person, to work as a team, to be patient and to try to keep improving myself every day.

My experience in the Audiovisual Communication degree at UC3M was, in summary, good. The truth is that I learned a lot about media theory, but above all I learned that, theory.

We started from the basis that the video and audio market is not exactly easy and, after graduating (perhaps a little late), I realized that it would have been better to specialize in something specific, that is, to learn a trade, than to study an amalgam of general knowledge with little depth and no practice.

We barely took cameras and when they left us, we couldn’t get them off campus. This clashes a lot with the experience I had on my Erasmus, which was shoot after shoot, being the year that I consider that I trained the most as a professional. The truth is that it is somewhat frustrating that they teach you ideas and then not be able to film them in the exercise.

Despite this, I have to say that I had great teachers (and others less great), who transmitted their passion for audiovisual arts to me. I made friends who are now project and filming partners. In addition, the campus offers a multitude of opportunities, events, and facilities that greatly facilitate study and self-learning.

It is a very active university, surrounded by organizations and associations from which you can take great advantage. For me, this is where the university value lies. If you finally decide on the degree instead of doing a module or diploma of something more specific, I would give you two tips:

1. Make the most of it. University life is very enriching and is full of stimuli or opportunities to grow personally and professionally.

2. Be aware that you probably have to do a master’s degree later. It is not always the case, sometimes the opportunity to jump into the world of work is in the university itself, but in these four years you hardly specialize in one branch.

In summary, I could recommend this degree at the Carlos III University, but only to a specific target. As for the university in general, it seems to me a good institution that cares about its students.

Studying Media and communication in the Uc3m had its good and bad parts. There were many different modules and I personally enjoyed the practical ones. We had modules like journalism, radio and TV, etc. These modules were fun as you could spend time brainstorming with your classmates. Classmates that then became best friends after 4 years behind those walls. On the other hand, there were some useless modules like economy or law. I wanted to learn everything about media and communication, but not about law. I believe there was too much theory and not a lot of practice, so it wasn’t as entertaining as it could have been.

The Campus is good. It has a really nice café and a beautiful garden to lay down on the breaks. The library is beautiful too, there is a lot of resources and it’s a nice place to study. Everything is really clean and there is accessible public transport from the city centre.

I studied my undergraduate at the Uc3m. Overall, the university is good. There are really nice facilities along with the campus. There is a very useful library where I remember I use to spend my time in 😂. Computers are available for everyone, and you can use both computers or laptops depending on your preferences. They even have a section of movies, and they allow you to borrow them for a while.

Studying CAV at my university was a great experience. It will teach you all about the story of cinema but I believe it was too theoretical. There are several modules that involved practice but whenever I graduated I felt that more practice could have been done. To sum up, Uc3m is a nice university with good communication to the campus and excellent facilities!

Beautiful campus, old but modern architecture. Very lively university, and lots of activities organized for students in exchange. In general teachers are young and have great experiences to share. Every classes are separate into 1/2 theorical, 1/2 pratical with diferent teachers, which means that you have the double amount of work. But i find the methodology good, with lots of interaction between teachers and students. In contrary, I think there is no enough follow up for students in exchange, teachers or the international board do not pay much attention to them. Timetables are ok, between 15 and 20 hours of class per week, but lots of personal work on the side. Finaly, long process for accommodation, you should book it very early. In general I will recomande it 100%, for the quality and the location.
