What is an Architecture Degree?

Architecture is a specialisation preferred by many young people who love solving problems, have a passion for creativity, or an innovative imagination ready to be shown off.

Over the years, it has become a very popular speciality. Young people are aware of the importance and diversity of Architecture, but also of the need for a permanent practice, as most Architecture courses aim at the practical part, to implement feasible structures not only on paper, through sketches, but also in real life.

Architects can choose to grow in all markets or follow a single specialisation, such as Landscape Architect, Resident Architect, Urban Designer, Green Design Architect or Interior Designer, according to their preferences.

Benefits of an Architecture Degree

Usually, a major reason that motivates students to study Architecture is the possibility of having an impact on their community. How do they do this? By exploring the world, analysing people’s work on constructions and looking for answers to identified problems, they become more creative, more open to new things, bringing a new vision to the world.

Critical thinking skills are constantly being developed by graduates who study Architecture because they get the opportunity to visualise the structures before they are made.

Upon completion of studies, there are many possibilities for employment, and salaries can be generous. A particular increase in the employment rate is expected to be in the Green Design field. This requires creating environmentally-friendly constructs that do not harm nature and generate sustainability.

Architecture Degree Structure

Young people must have a university degree in Architecture to pursue a career in that field, that is an Architecture Bachelor or Master of Architecture. Often, undergraduate programmes last 5 years, and Master programmes last between 2 and 3 years, depending on the chosen university and the form of education followed. One notable thing is that Master programmes are often for those who have not completed a Bachelor’s specialisation, and that is why the course component can be similar to the Bachelor’s. As far as Doctoral programmes are concerned, the duration is 3 years, and the architects work on research projects.

At the same time, it should be mentioned that the United States and other territories have introduced a professional license Architect Registration Examination. This is a mandatory exam which tests the candidate’s skills, abilities and knowledge. In the UK, for example, the final registration to become an architect is regulated by the Architects Registration Board.

Although the list of courses may differ from one country to another, some of the most important modules for a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture are Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD), Physics, Visualisation, Science, and Technology.

Throughout their studies, students can take part in various internship programmes or choose a tutor architect to work with. In this way, they get a better idea of what this profession is about in practice and gain the necessary experience needed for their professional development.

    A Great Experience

As a student at IE University studying architecture, I have a unique perspective on the institution. Let me share my thoughts on this university:

Overall, my experience at IE University has been quite positive. The university’s commitment to a holistic education, combined with its innovative approach to learning, has made my time here rewarding. Here are some key aspects I appreciate:

Interdisciplinary Approach: IE University places a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. In the field of architecture, this means I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with students from various backgrounds, such as engineering, business, and design. It’s been enlightening to work on projects that integrate different disciplines, mirroring the real-world scenarios architects often find themselves in.
Faculty and Industry Connections: The professors at IE University are experienced professionals in their respective fields, and they bring a wealth of practical knowledge into the classroom. This has greatly enriched my architectural education. Additionally, the university’s strong connections with industry professionals and firms provide students with valuable networking opportunities and potential internships.
Global Perspective: IE University’s international approach to education is a significant advantage. I’ve had the chance to collaborate with students from all over the world, which has broadened my cultural awareness and global perspective. This is particularly important in architecture, as it’s a field where global influences and trends play a significant role.
Innovation and Technology: The university’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements is impressive. In architecture, this means access to cutting-edge software, tools, and resources, which have been instrumental in my academic and design work.
On the flip side, there are a few aspects that might not suit everyone:

Tuition Costs: IE University is a private institution, and as such, tuition can be on the higher side. This might be a challenge for some students, but there are scholarship opportunities and financial aid options available.
Intensive Programs: The university’s programs are often quite intensive, requiring a significant time commitment. While this can be beneficial for learning, it can also be demanding, so time management skills are crucial.
In conclusion, I would certainly recommend IE University to those interested in studying architecture. Its unique approach to education, international perspective, and strong industry connections have enriched my architectural journey. Just keep in mind the financial considerations and be prepared to put in the effort, and you’ll find a stimulating and rewarding academic experience at IE University.

    IE University

IE University’s strengths lie in the method of learning students are able to abstain through the small class sizes and direct contact with professors. (At least in my experience) most of the university’s professors very credible and experienced professionals. I do think however that the university’s retake process that students go through when they fail a class is not strenuous and rigorous enough, resulting in a general decrease rigour and in quality of work and grades in the university.

The university is also (in my personal opinion) geared towards business—although that is inevitable given it was originally a business school and still is known as such. I do think though that especially the other schools such as the School of Architecture and Design should be treated as such and not as a business institution. For example, I believe that more investment should be made in the softwares and materials that the students require, rather than capitalising on them by overpricing such required materials and having such a big profit margin.

There are several things that I believe the university needs to work on, and some requests/suggestions are heard by the university, and some fall upon deaf ears. Overall I would say that though it has its faults, I am quite satisfied with the learning experience at the university in general.

Good program, but not selective enough

The program is very strong as it is a perfect combination of design and engineering for Architecture which creates a good balance. Additionally, the professors tend to be professionals who are active and successful in their field which makes the courses more interesting. However, the school tends to be not selective enough that results in a vast difference in students’ knowledge and skill levels, and thus the course pace has to slow down in order for everyone to understand and learn even the most basic facts.

    good opportunities

The university offers good courses as well as many different opportunities, with guests speakers and events which all students are encouraged to attend year around. It leaves a good ground of opportunities for all IE students and can inspire in many ways.

    International architecture course

For me, the biggest benefits of the university are how international the classes are, and how small they are. It really allows for people to connect with everyone in their class, as well a more hands-on learning environment, as each of the professors knows you and your projects very well. This allows students to fully develop their projects, and present a more well rounded final. As well as that, the course has a perfect balance between creativity and technicality, providing architecture students with a very well rounded education.
