Such a degree is aimed at students who want to pursue careers in investment analysis, management, banking, auditing, consulting and financial management. It teaches students how to assess the assets and liabilities of an organization financially and manage the financial risk of their activity.
Accounting & Finance covers the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting and finance but also includes other aspects of the business activity, such as financial management and control, corporate finance, company accounts, investment and business law. Optional module options provided by different universities around the world often allow students to specialize in a particular area such as auditing, taxation, etc.
The completion of an Accounting & Finance degree comes along with numerous benefits. Students develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly demanded by employers in both the private and the public sector and result in graduates often finding employment in large multinational organizations that offer professional services such as PwC, KPMG and Deloitte. On top of that, established companies around the world offer excellent and well-structured graduate schemes, which help Accounting & Finance graduates to kick-start their careers.
Accounting & Finance degrees are mostly practically oriented. They allow students to put the knowledge and skills they acquire on a daily basis to practice through simulated and real-life business accounts management and work placement opportunities.
Most Accounting & Finance degrees are professionally accredited by professional bodies, such as ACCA, AIA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, which provides students with the opportunity to become chartered accountants. Students gain professional qualifications in accountancy, which eliminates the need for additional certifications after graduation.
Due to the nature of the Accounting & Finance Degree, which complements business-related subjects, students often have the opportunity to complete a joint honours degree.
An Accounting & Finance degree’s duration varies depending on the country and degree level. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting & Finance can be completed in three years. However, universities also offer students the option to take a sandwich course, which allows them to undertake a year-long placement between their second and third year, which extends the course to four years. Four years is the regular time of completion of this degree in other countries, such as the United States.
The first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance introduces the core principles of accounting and finance, including financial accounting, management accounting and finance as well as economics and business law. The second year’s focus is usually on managerial and business economics, financial control, corporate finance and company accounts, but optional modules might enable students to pursue their interests in other aspects of Accounting & Finance such as auditing or strategic business analysis. At this point, students studying at Higher Education Institutions in the UK could choose to take an industry placement in order to apply the theoretical concepts and the acquired knowledge to practice in the professional environment. The next stage of this degree is dedicated to further-developing students’ knowledge of financial and management accounting. Optional modules might enable students to specialize in a particular area of their choice such as auditing or taxation in some countries like the UK.
Masters’ degrees in Accounting & Finance usually take between 12 and 18 months to complete depending on the country that students choose for their studies.

My experience as a first year at University of Johannesburg was good and also bad at the same time. The bad side of the experience had nothing to do with the services at uni the bad side was because I was not familiar with the province and as a learner with anxiety it was hard for me to blend in and make friends quickly but with the help of the university service they provide to their students the experience became much better they offer therapy for students, there’s also stuff that helps first comers get to know their surroundings in the uni premises, they offer mentorship to students which most likely help students have someone olderish to communicate to if you are one of the students struggling to make friends. The Programs initiate group discussion and participation during the lectures which help quiet students communicate with other learners in class and start to form study groups with them.So I would say those services are good to helping students like me and I would definitely recommend my university to someone else.
View moreI had a great experience at the university of Johannesburg. The lecturers are knowledgeable and supportive, making complex concepts easy to understand. The university’s strong reputation and career opportunities are definitely a plus. I appreciated the campus facilities and the sense of community among students. Overall, l’d highly recommend UJ to anyone looking for quality education and a well rounded university experience.
View moreThe university world is very competitive, UJ is one of those university and it makes everything 10 times as hard. You feel like you need to beat your peers to come out victorious. That alone can make you feel like its you against the world , your family is not around, your community s not around except for these new people you just met. The academia is on another level, you are sure you are getting world class education. Its hard but its world class, you are truly empowered when it comes to the actual knowledge and skills you receive.
The group assignments(Audit assignment) were very close to the working world experience and that was very important in preparing us for the real world.
The counseling service is not readily available so they can improve on that, they need to be easily available , when one feel overwhelmed they should be able to go see a professional asap.
But all is all, they gave us the BEST education, developed us mentally , emotionally and intellectually for sure.
View moreGreat university loved it it soo much and i would go back again if i have to the only thing i am not happy about is the on campus residences they really need to be renovated but overall experience is great. also do not fear your lecturers they are human like always ask for help if you need help
View moreThey offer the best course and provide more than sufficient study resources to help you complete your course. Libraries are open 24Hrs for the convenience of students to study at their own pace and at their own time
View moreUJ is a great university which has great programs and also supportive lecturers and they will give you respect even though you older than them. The way the university is built and the space is just so unique
View moreUJ’s Accounting department, I believe, is one of the best in the country. The content is useful and the lecturers are helpful.
However, help will not come to you you will have to ask for it.
The only thing I disliked is some lecturers who simply read the slides in class and did very little to no explaining. Meaning that I had to watch additional Youtube videos to understand concepts.
A great university with great sports activities, i liked everything about it, the lecturers are supportive and kind. They also give out food parcel to the poor and there is also some sort of university bursary for self funded students, it also provides great job apportunities.
View moreIt was a great university; they would support you from your first year to your last, and it was also well-organised and professional. They had many accommodations, so it was easy for everyone to get an accommodation, and I would really recommend it
View moreFrom my own experience, I got the first hand real life experience as a student with lectures. There is not a day we’re I asked for help or mentorship and never got it. Lectures are always willing to help.
