What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

    Faculty of Medicine, Belgrade

I am studying at the Medical Faculty of the University of Belgrade, majoring in Integrated Academic Studies in Medicine. What bothers people the most is what direction it is, how long the studies last and how long they study. My course lasts 6 years and after those 6 years it is calculated as if you have completed basic and master studies (6 0), hence the name of the integrated study in the name of the course. After completing 6 years, you acquire the right to the title of doctor of medicine, after which you can opt for further education or specialization that you want, but do not have to, you can work as a general practitioner. About 500 students enroll in my major each year, with all the list moves. In addition to my major, there are also basic academic studies of nursing, but also medicine in English, which is a more expensive variant of my major and costs 7000eur per year. At the medical school, non-budget students are a rarity, because if you give year after year, you are on a budget, because when you pass the conditional exams for the next year, you have fulfilled the right to budget funding. For self-financing students, the tuition fee is around 127,000 dinars. The faculty is not very organized and requires a lot of personal commitment. Professors are also doctors, so professorship is not their primary job, which is reflected in most cases in their lack of interest, but if you show interest, they are always ready to meet you and help as much as they can and know. In general, the concept of the faculty is different from the others, because it contains a lot of practical subjects, and attendance at all forms of teaching is mandatory, which can be exhausting, but it lasts. The first three years of study are the so-called preclinical years, where obstetric subjects are taught, which provide some fundamental knowledge and general principles of structure and function of the human body, but every year there is one clinical subject that requires work with patients in hospital. The next 3 years are clinical and the exercises are reduced to working in the hospital and learning the practical part. I would recommend to anyone who likes that vocation to enroll in my college, but not if they are not sure, because to the people who enroll, because they did not know what else or at the urging of someone else, the collapse will be a real torture. The faculty is located within the Clinical Center of Serbia, so it is well connected with all parts of the city. What is a problem is the distance to the nearest canteen. It takes about half an hour to get to the first canteen, which is usually not enough in the break between lectures for lunch. In addition to the educational part, the faculty also offers a handful of sports and entertainment activities, as well as its own cafe (which in my opinion is important). Parties, excursions, but also serious trips are often organized, as well as the famous Medicinijada, which is organized every year in Montenegro.

    Medical studies

I am studying at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. At this faculty, there are integrated academic studies, which I study, for a period of 6 years, after which I received the title of doctor of medicine. In addition to this, there are also basic academic studies lasting 4 years – nursing. There are 12 semesters at the IAS, the last of which represents clinical experience. The faculty has amphitheaters and gymnasiums at many institutes and clinics inside and outside the KCS. At the beginning of the study, subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology … After that, in the last 3 years, clinical subjects such as: internal medicine, neurology, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics … At the faculty we have lectures that are mandatory only on some subjects. In addition, we have exercises and seminars that are mandatory. Exercises involve practical work in gyms or at the clinic. We also have colloquia during the year. Pre-examination points are awarded for attendance and teaching activities, as well as for passing colloquia. The exam itself has two parts – first the practical part which is a condition for the final oral part of the exam. Some exams are taken only in writing, although there are few of them. Interest in students varies from professor to professor. However, the exercise assistants are generally very dedicated. At the beginning of the school year, a Guide for that school year is published. The program of each subject, exam questions, as well as dates of deadlines and holidays are presented there. We usually have seven deadlines. If necessary, October 2 is introduced. Graduates, in addition to these, have additional deadlines. The faculty is hard and requires a lot of effort. The best results are achieved by those who are best organized and who work throughout the school year. The conditional cases are very extensive and carry a lot of ECTS. The candidate who is ranked in the top 450 at the entrance exam is on a budget, and another 50 self-financing students are accepted. At least that’s how it was when I enrolled. A student can enroll in a higher year of study (second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth) on a budget if he passes the conditional courses and has 48 ECTS. Conditional courses and 37 ECTS are required for self-financing. Self-financing for IAS costs 126,000 dinars and can be paid in 4 installments. Renewal costs about 30,000 a year and is paid in two installments. For foreign nationals, there are medical studies in English. The faculty is located in the city center and is well connected in terms of transportation. Students who are not from Belgrade mostly live in dormitories or have private accommodation.

I am studying at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade. I’m in my second year of study. The faculty is within the Clinical Center, so finding your way around the institutes is a bit more difficult. Sometimes it takes about 10 minutes to walk from one lecture to another. It is well connected with all parts of the city. The faculty enrols 500 students a year, a certain number drop out right at the beginning, so there are far fewer people left in the following years. The first three years of study were reversed for the preclinical part, where general subjects are taught, as a basis for knowledge of medicine. The clinical part begins in the fourth year, when it is more reduced to practice and works with patients. From each subject, there are numerous authors of different textbooks, outside the official ones, so there is a great possibility to choose the literature. I think it’s promising, you just need to find yourself in a certain area and really love it. The faculty has a canteen where breakfast is served. Other canteens are very close by. There is a possibility of home, but I live in a private apartment with 2 more roommates, which costs us 130e per month. Belgrade is a beautiful city for student life, there are many places to go out, numerous cultural events, parts of the city where you can find beautiful nature.

    Communication

Our books are outdated and there is not good communication between professors and students. There are exceptions but overall if you want to learn for your jobs and not your degree you have to learn outside curriculum. We have to much information to learn for to little time because we are following Bologna system.
