What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Forensic Studies Review

The university has a wide range of faculties and fields of study. The programs are not so accurate though – most of them are similar to others just the name is more fancy. My field is called Digital forensics but it’s basically electrical engineering combined with basics of cybersecurity and some humanities studies

Subject showing you how future work looks like

I’m on my third year right now and I’d like to say a couple of words about one of the subjects. It’s called software engineering and it teaches you a lot of things that you will need for work as a software developer – On lectures we have latest trends like agile/scrum, docker, Kubernetes etc. and on labs we do an actual project for the client. It’s a great experience and I would recommend it to everyone

    Grading and opportunities for students.

This university has it’s ups and downs. I have mixed feelings about professors and staff. While some ones are really helpful and commited to teaching, others can make you mad about their grading system (e.g. on one subject grades were done after the semester has already ended, without any comment where the mistakes were made. Grading every algorithm and its attached report should take for sure more than 10-15 min but they were graded every ~4 mins, all done in one evening). In the beginning of the remote studies some professors weren’t prepared for those kind of teaching but now it is acceptable form. The curriculum is mostly good yet there are some subjects that aren’t worth anything. Personally I value that the university puts effort to create many opportunities for students like organizing jobfairs, local events, visiting CERN. If I were choose my Uni again I would still choose AGH mostly for career prospects and great localization(campus, places to socialize, city transport etc.).

Hi! I am a Computer Engineering student. I am planning to study AGH Science and Technology University with the help of Erasmus+ program. Did you have any difficulty passing the exams. Some people say courses are very difficult in AGH. Especially faculty courses. Is there a difference between faculty courses and Erasmus courses? I would be really happy if you answer:)

AGH will show you possible ways but you need to pick one.

AGH has an opinion of one of the best technical universities in Poland. While I did not study on the other universities I can say that in my opinion it can be a true statement. Depending what do you study. And what do you expect. I have studied Computer Science on the Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering faculty (because there are a few faculties where you can choose Computer Science course and it’s quite important on which faculty you are). And I wasn’t expecting that the university will completely prepare me to be a programmer or to do any other IT related job. And because of that attitude I wasn’t disappointed after graduating. If you think that you will learn the latest technologies and be ready to start working right after finishing the uni without doing anything on your own you’re wrong.
    Why is that?
The syllabus is very extensive. You will learn a lot of math, physics and IT related stuff. But in most cases it will be rather an introduction than a detailed course. Especially when it comes to programming, web development or managing operating systems. You can learn basics, do some intro-level project but it won’t be enough to get a job in this field. You will need to do more projects on your own and learn additional things. And you need to be prepare for that.
Now I will quickly cover some aspects of AGH that may help you make a decision.
In terms of facilities – it’s great. There are many laboratory room that are well equipped, everything is in one place and they are continuously buying new stuff and building new buildings. However now (as of March 2021) the vast majority of classes are held online so you might not have the opportunity to use it. More about online studies later.
About professors – it’s a little bit of lottery unfortunately. For some subjects they were great, always helpful, always prepared and great in sharing the knowledge they had. For some subject you wouldn’t even notice that you have a professor. They were just sending us assignments and that was it. But generally, for the subjects that were the most important in my opinion like analysis, physics, programming – they were alright.
Location – short story – it is amazing. Everything in one place, city center, dorms close to the other facilities. 10/10
Student life – now everything is closed obviously but when there is no global pandemic you really can feel that you’re a student. Many clubs, huge space near dorms for a BBQ, 10 min walks to the Main Square. Would recommend.
I wasn’t living in dorms so it’s hard to say for me but everyone I know was recommending AGH dorms. One thing worth saying is that it can be quite loud as there are always a lot of people having parties and drinking near the dorms.
Internationality – again, I don’t know much but we have an ESN network working on the university, we’re supporting Erasmus program (and some others too I guess), there are some courses in English but mine was in Polish so idk.

I want to mention one more thing in this review that is really important and without it I would rate my experience much lower – research groups and students associations. There are dozens of them on the AGH. And everyone will find something for himself. You can find people interested in building racing cars, robots, people creating games, doing other IT projects, organizing events, developing soft skills, you name it. Most of them are working using Polish language but even without it you can still participate in many activities focused on English speaking students. You definitely should find something you are interested.

Summing things up, CS on AGH will not prepare you to do your job. But it will show you many paths in IT you can take and give you a lot of opportunities. It’s your decision what you will do with this opportunities and what path you will take.

A great mix of high level education and exciting student life

AGH University of Science is one of the most recognizable universities in Poland – and that is not without a reason.
From the very beginning of my Computer Science education in AGH UST I have been coming across experienced professors with a complex knowledge of the subjects they are delivering. Even though there were some exceptions, the majority of the professors were very competent and managed to pass much knowledge.
The facilities of AGH UST are of highest standards and new modern buildings are being built almost all the time on the university campus.
Putting the studying matters aside, what is so exceptional about this university is the variety in the student life. Numerous students’ organizations and science clubs are running with the support of the university authorities. Every student has a chance to find some extra activities, engage, contribute and take the most out of studying at AGH UST.
An equally important, often overlooked advantage of AGH is its location. Unlike other universities in Krakow, all the facilities of AGH are inside one big campus. Therefore students are not required to travel from one part of the city to another just to go to another class.
AGH UST managed to adjust to the pandemic circumstances very smoothly. In the Computer Science course all of the classes have been held online since the epidemic started, yet the level of teaching did not drop a bit. Moreover, the authorities are doing their best to support the actions of the university NGOs during these difficult times.

    Learning what's important

I’m currently on the 3rd year of studies. On the first year there was a lot of maths and theory. On the second we slowly transitioned to programming subjects like databases, functional programming and introduction to certain languages. We also had more projects to do. Third year is the best so far. I greatly enjoy almost all of my subjects and I see how they’re applicable in my future work. Object oriented programming, networks or artificial intelligence, IoT course are all taught in a way that leaves me curious and satisfied with the labs/exercises The courses are all online but they are organised well and there’s no mess with it. Overall I would greatly recommend it.

One of the best unis in Poland, campus is awesome!

I really enjoy studying here. There’s a plethora of student organizations (EESTEC, BEST, ESN), a lot of research groups for every faculty and a lot to do besides studying. The campus is 3-15 minutes away from department building depending on the dorm and faculty you study. Computer science is good. A lot of math in the first year. Some subjects could be delivered better but there’s a ton of practice on the second year and many of my friends didn’t have any problems finding internship after 4th semester. The thing I like the most is the campus and the fact that everything is really close. The main square is 15 min walk from campus, there’s a lot of restaurants to eat in vicinity and if you want to go for some shopping, the closest shopping centre is 15 min by bus. Overall I think it’s a great experience studying here.

    People At the university

I really like my university. Why? I think the best thing what happened there is meeting my friends. About education I can say a lot of good things because after all we have some knowledge and we don’t have any problem with finding work. Of course, as every university AGH is not perfect. A big part is the professors. Sometimes you have a very good teacher sometimes not.
