What Is a Marketing Degree?

A business cannot survive if its products are not marketed in the proper way. Luckily for all the businesses out there, the number of candidates wanting to pursue a marketing career is growing tremendously.

The aim of this degree is to help students anticipate, manage, and satisfy customers’ needs and wants. By doing so, they will be able to effectively communicate the benefits of any business product to the targeted market.

Due to the fact that marketing is a complex industry, which tackles many areas ranging from market research to advertising and promotion, this degree focuses on all parts of the process before concentrating on a particular area of study.

Benefits of a Marketing Degree

Good news for marketing graduates! If you did not know yet, marketing is an essential aspect of all types of businesses, from all sectors of activity. Thus, all of them rely on marketers to promote and sell their products. A high market demand comes with many job opportunities available.

According to Labor Department Findings, graduates with a marketing degree can earn 98% more per hour than the ones working in the industry without having a specialised degree.

Furthermore, students are equipped with transferable skills, such as excellent communication abilities, strategic thinking, planning, data analysis and so on, that can be used in other industries too.

Marketing Degree Structure

Marketing degrees can be studied either as Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). The major difference lies in the presence of more scientific and technological aspects, which are commonly seen in a BSc rather than a BA.

Like most degrees, marketing courses last between three and four years, depending on the university. However, there are institutions which give students the possibility to do a two-year associate’s degree – also called a ‘foundation’ degree.

Even if graduating from both degrees qualifies candidates to work in this industry, a Bachelor degree has higher chances to lead you to well-paid jobs.

    A Glimpse of the Future

My stay in that university was totally indescribable but I will try my best to make you have a feel of it. Here in the Philippines, before the k-12 program was implemented, students were required to have at least 17 years of education (three years of pre-school, six years of elementary/grade school, four years of high school, and four/five years of college life depending on the program you choose).

Before college, I was enrolled in the province and studied there for 13 years. I had no idea of what it was like to be studying in the city. I would not say that my high school and previous schooling years were spent in a ruralized area (because I mentioned that I used to study in the province). I was enrolled in an exclusive school in high school and my environment was somehow already advanced and the people were no different from those that I encountered in the city. Given that, I did not really have a hard time socializing and fitting in when it was finally my turn to study in Manila. The culture shock was not with the people I was introduced to because even if I came from an all-girls school, I somehow found it comfortable hanging out and communicating with the opposite gender, but the shock was with how the education was executed. I was in shock because everything was intense and I needed to really give myself an extra push to save a penny and finish my studies on time.

I am confident to say that my choice of university was the best choice of my life. Professors were competent enough to make you admire them. The field I chose was Communication/Advertising/Marketing. This is the only university I knew that offered an all-in-one program. In other universities, you may notice that they would offer a centralized course/program but at UST, they offered me all the subjects that were related in terms of Communication and Media. I would say that AB major students, most especially Communication Arts students at the University of Santo Tomas, are well-rounded and could fit in any environment.

Aside from offering the best courses, UST also has good surroundings and also has a Church inside of the campus. The structures were beautiful, the area was spacious enough to have a wide field for sports and concerts, and even a well-known hospital, too. Everything is beautiful. Just one thing though…it floods when it rains.

I am a proud Thomasian and I would recommend my university to all of my younger friends. It provided me with the best education and I am confident to say that it also made me the happiest.
